Getting ready for trip
« on: June 29, 2014, 11:40:38 AM »
Installed new rear tire and tube on my cb750. Took me 2 hours. It's the kind of job where 3 hands would be helpful to have.

Ill be leaving on my retirement tour of the US in a week or so. Still have to change oil and filter, check/set valves, and tweak and sync the carbs.

Cross oil/filter change off that list. I'm having a productive day.

What great idea!  I'm just a year away myself and I have simlar thoughts of doing that, too.   How many miles a day?  How long are you planning to take?  Tell me more.

Hoping you can get the tire balanced. That would sure help out on a long trip.

Any updates on tentative routing and dates? If I'm at home you have a place to sleep and shower. Guess a few cold beers, etc too.

I'll be out 7/29 until 8/9 but home on 8/6. If you find yourself on/near I-70 near the Kansas border I'll be in that vicinity overnight on 8/7and 8/8 working in Burlington, CO with an extra bed at the motel.

You should do a Vlog on the rode.  If not you, some other tourer needs to, there a very few touring videos on youtube who give insights on touring on an older bike that isn't an adventure bike.

Thanks Jerry, we'll see how things line up once iIget closer. I'm leaving in about a week. I'll post here and on my website, from the road. Anyone in/near an area I'm passing through, I'd love to meet for a coffee, meal, or ride along. I'm a photographer, but dislike video.

Well, I look forward to checking out your blog updates either way.  I am to far from your route, but have fun.  Also, I bought one of these when I was in OBX, if you go to many NPS parks get one of these books and collect the stamps:

Did the valves this morning, and turned all the air screws to 1 turn out. (The air screws were all over the place: from 1/2 turn out to 2 turns out.) Ready for the carb sync!

Edit added: carbs sync'ed. Thank you hondanut Bob! Bike is ready to roll.

Now to look into insurance and roaming plan.

Great to be able to help a little.  Does it run any different since you have "tweaked" everything?

I did notice that you have an leaking float valve and wonder if that might be causing some of your low mileage.  It also might be causing the float level to be off which could affect the mixture.

It does seem to run better. For some reason the word tighter comes to mind.

Did the bike leave a small puddle of gas in your driveway or garage?

I could tie a little baggie to the end of each overflow drain tube to isolate which carb it is.   ;)

But in my garage where I park my bike, there is only a stain if I forget to close the petcock overnight. With the bike running, the gas useage would exceed the gas leakage into a full bowl, I think.

When I pulled my plugs after some prolonged idling, plug #1 was heavily sooted with carbon, so it could be that one, but that was the cylinder where the air screw was only turned out 1/2 turn which is the more likely explanation.

If you follow Frank's blog on his website, you'll see that he made it to Rochester tonight.  Seems like he ran through some rain and about mid-day was in Oswego with a busted tach cable (?).  This is probably where he stopped to dry and check the malfunctioning tachometer.
