Tim here - In the heart of Toronto. I'm on my third CB 'project'
I started with a 1977 CB750 back in 1996. Didn't get a license till 2001 if that tells you anything. Got tired of working on the bike, and didn't really ever fall in love with the style of the bike. I preferred the older models. Sold it to a friend and bought a running 1973 CB500K.
As it turned out with the CB500, the front forks were both bent - didn't notice till I rebuilt them. Replaced those. Did a bunch of work on it, rode it a bit, didn't run very well. Then I moved, my daughter was born and the bike sat for a couple years. Brought it back to life, spent $600 on it trying to get it running and then promptly sold it for $600
- Yeah, I'm a loser.
Before I sold the 500 I stumbled across a 1976 CB550F with 'good bones' for $450. No rust or dents, original pipes, gauges like-new etc. Wasn't running at the time - cables disconnected etc. Spent $900 on new Honda parts (new controls, cables, all sorts of rubber bits, NOS brown vinyl seat off eBay etc.) - Only to find out it wasn't running really well.
So, now it's in the shop for a carb rebuild and tuning. They found compression issues, and very little vacuum at idle. So, off the cylinders came and wouldn't you know it, broken rings on #3, damaged piston as a result, and cylinder walls worn to the limits where we really now need a rebore. Cam chain guides worn/broken... 30,000 miles and probably neglect will do that.
Now I'm torn between putting one new piston and new rings all around in, and living on the edge of the need for a bore. Or, spending an extra $350 on a bore and all new pistons.
The bill for this round of service will be $1000 - $1350 depending on my decision. So, now I'm into this bike for $2500
Certainly a lot for the bike, but, I'm keeping it and any bike I bought for $2500 might have similar problems anyhow, if not right off the bat then possibly in the future. At least I know what I'm riding now!
Sorry - had to vent
