CB550 Electronic Ignition
« on: March 30, 2005, 12:07:35 AM »
I have a 75 Honda cb550 & would like to install electronic ingnition. I "hear" that it would improve my bike's performance in the starting department. BUT my mechanic says it would make no difference. I tend to think he is annoyed with working on an old beater like mine & would rather sell me another one of HIS old beaters!

So is there a noticeable difference? Is it worth it? It seems my points ALWAYS need to be readjusted or replaced. Why do they go out of whack so much?

Also where is the best place on the net to buy them cheap. Anywhere that shows how to install as well? I really don't want to get rid of me old steel dragon yet. She's reliable!

Thank you

I'm still on my old points with my bikes, but I have installed an electronic ignition in my car. I don't think you will notice an increase in performance or responsiveness.
The point ignition was used in Honda's GP bikes of the 60's and the 250 6-cylinder rev'ed up to 12.000 and more!

The main reason to upgrade is that you don't have to readjust all the time. But that's surely a good reason. It'll make your dragon even more reliable.

Cheers, Remi

Like mentioned, there will be the advantage of: install it, adjust it and forget it.
Your bike will be easier to start, and it will run slightly better. Also the fuel economy will increase a litttle bit.
Once it is installed and adjusted properly, you will never regret it.
Dyna, Boyer Bransden and Newtronic, all produce systems.
Boyer and Newtronic are making systems that can be used with your old coils. If you buy a Dyna system, it is recommended that you buy Dyna high performance coils.

Boyer Bransden do not have a website, so you will have to find a reseller, such as:

Notwithstanding the comments made on the link attached by Sand, I've found the "fit and forget" nature of electronic ignition to be well worth it.

Boyer Bransden (UK) can be reached at +44-1622-730939 (Maidstone Kent), they don't appear to have a website.

I have had a Boyer Bransden Mark III system on my Kawasaki twin for 9 years and 35 000 miles. It has worked faultless ever since I installed it, and I have no problem recommending it.
And the reason I bought the system was that there was no dealer in Norway that could supply new points for that bike, but one of them offered me the Boyer system for a good price.
That was before I learned that my Kawa twin share it's points with the CB750 :D
But nevertheless, I'm glad I bought the Boyer system. :)

am running the Dyna 'S'... and it starts better, and revs cleaner, in the upper rev range.... though i cant see and difference in the fuel economy..... fit it and forget it.... good money spent...

I have a Dyna-s and Accel 3ohm coils on my CB750, and it runs a lot better than it did before.  Sure, maybe it's because the old coils were toast, but the bike starts on  the first kick every time, and midrange hesitation has been greatly reduced.  No, it wont solve all your problems, but it surely masked a few on my bike  ;D .  It might be harder on your battery than points, but I can't compare mine to the points, since my electrical system has been problematic since I bought the bike.

I've never owned a 550, but I've been fitting either Martek 440 (sadly not made any more, but if you can find one, it'll probably work fine) or Dyna S/Dyna 3 ignitions to my Cb750's for many years now, and I've never been disappointed with their performance. It's just a case of fit, set, and forget. Magnificent. Cheers, Terry. 8)
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

"Crazy is a very misunderstood term, it's a fine line that some of us can lean over and still keep our balance" (thanks RB550Four)

What model 750?  If it's a sohc, then they are interchangeable.

I know the dyna s worked for the 550 as well as the 750, a few others perhaps.
