Cleaning chrome mufflers - what is this?

Hey guys, anyone see this kind of stain on their chrome pipes? This is a factory pipe and there's this gray stain on it. It looks as though there was a liquid on it because there are drip marks. Just trying to clean these up and see if there's good chrome under it. 00 steel wool won't do anything to it.

Just a guess but maybe a severe caseof battery acid from drip tube.

Ah yes, totally. I knew it was something like that. Good thing it's more towards the bottom. Seems like there's no way to remedy this.
Thanks guys

Use 0000 steel wool, no scratches. Can't fix the acid tho

Did the acid eat the chrome off?
If so, there is no cleaning it because the chrome is gone.

Yeah, it looks like the acid has totally removed the chrome. I used 000 steel wool and it doesn't scratch the chrome at all. Not really much more I can do.
Thanks

Because it is underneath I would coat it with high heat silver to stop corrosion. Then use the steel wool to get the over spray off the chrome

Yeah, that's a good idea. And it's the lower of the pipes on the 4-4 setup so there's one covering it anyway. A little silver would do well.
