'74 Cb550--- Oil leak problem
« on: August 25, 2014, 09:21:20 PM »
Hey all. The bike has been running well after the top end rebuild with the 650 cam swap except for the last 100miles. At first i noticed the engine oil light randomly going on and off during rides. Then today, i noticed a small pool of oil under my bike. The size is probably 3" x 6" of oil on the floor.

I popped my sprocket cover as thats where im noticing the oil leak. Once open, i noticed that its coming from the pressure sensor (?) as that's the only thing 'wet'. I kinda wiped it before taking a pic. Sorry.

What do you guys think would be the best approach?

See picture.

Hy dave
Are you talking about replacing the whole sensor or gasket only?

Edit
I dont see an oil on the sensor

the whole switch, its only an on/off pressure switch, take it to your generic parts place and match up a new one,the switch  pressure aint real important, about 8 bucks.

I wouldn't risk it. The thread is - I don't know the word in English - well... special.
Do what Dave suggests and don't overtighten it.

if its not leaking from the black plastic part as they can do you might try removing it and wrapping some Teflon tape around the thread, its a tapered type thread so tighten it down carefully and snug,if it stops the leak great but is the oil light still flicking on and off?if the wire rubs to ground it will flick on and off, have a look at the wire,if the wire isn't rubbing but the light flickers replace the switch.

if the switch is dodgy itll flicker a lot maybe?follow the wire right through and make sure its not frayed or rubbed through somewhere, right up to the gang plug connector and up to the lamp.
