So I've been working on fixing up this bike for a while now. And I've checked just about everything on it and still won't start. I decided to have a look at the electrical and found a complete rats nest. The electrical is from a 71 500 but seems to have the fuse box and some other wiring missing.

I'm going to order a fuse box replacement from honda man but aside from that I really don't know where to start. Any suggestions?

The only fuse that was on there was attached to the starter solonoid and kept blowing

I don't muck around with these things anymore. Just get a new wiring loom and all your electrical problems should be solved. The wires get brittle after all this time and you will end up chasing your tail trying to solve the previous owners efforts.

So just get the wiring part with the 3 clips that go onto the wiring panel? Ill be honest I've searched a bit but they all seem to be the blades not receptacles. The only one I've found is a brand new one on eBay for 100+ shipping....

Depends on your goals.

You want it closer to stock? So, you can reference standard wire diagrams? Or, just make "work".

I don't see a fuse box at all. And I don't think you have the standard rectifier. That thing on the bottom might be a reg/rect. from some other source. Probably the original selenium rectifier failed, and that combined unit was handy enough to kludge into the the bike and allow it to drive about. You can chose to restore to what Honda intended or clean up the conversion so it makes a bit more sense to those that understand electrical matters.

the early 500 had those pin connectors,they change to spade type later,all 500s run only one fuse in a metal tube fuse holder.

The CB500K2 (ED, F, G) has 3 fuses (5A, 7A and 15A) and so does the CB500K3.

I know the 72 500 had only one fuse. I you want to use multiple fuses the 550 harness is good, but you have to jumper the safety switch/relay.

It's not that, well... the English do at home. Beside the 550s, 500s were sold here into 1978 and Honda had learned one fuse was simply not enough. 500s were five more years in our markets than in US and one would expect that as a consequence there are more survivors.

I don't know. Why bother to bring this up? It's irrelevant (FYI Europe has 2x more inhabitants than US). Anyway, 'European' models surface in USA and 'A' models surface in Europe every now and then and since this is an international forum I like to keep information as accurate as possible. Hope you guys can live with that.

Alright so my goals for this bike is to keep relatively stock. I mean I just wana ride this bike before the -40 hits winnipeg...

Bought this off eBay to clean up the hack job, I'd imagine that the fuse box from honda man would plug right in there right ? Would you guys recommend buying a new rectifier ? I got no clue how to wire up a rectifier I'll hafta do my research.

This may be a stupid question but my picture 4 shows my male ends on the bike 3x4 and 3x3. The rectifier has a 2x3 male end which would fill up the connections in the new panel. Where does the fuse box plug into? What am I missing here ?

It depends on if you've been confused enough by suggestions of having a European model wire diagram to follow or a North American wire diagram to follow. You won't be "plugging in" a fuse box if you follow the diagram on pg 143, chapter 14 of the Cb500/550 Honda Shop Manual.

The bike doesn't need 3 fuses to operate. The extra head and tail fuses are for convenience if shorts occur in only those branches. If only those blow, you can still run the bike on a three fuse model. If the main goes, you're just as dead on the highway as having a single fuse arrangement.

FYI: I've never had the head or tail light fuse blow on any of my SOHC4's. Main ones, yes. The sub branches, no.

Fj The panel in your pic looks like it will restore things back to stock. It is equipped with the "sub harness"
plugs, (the actual harness is in back where it can't be seen in the pic.) The rectifier you ordered should complete things. I just sold a sub harness to another member here about a month or so ago who had
the exact problem you're having, butchered wiring. The main fuse holder should be part of that "sub harness" I'll attach a pic of the one I sold pictured without the panel. Add your rectifier and voltage regulator, and it's pretty much plug and play.
Check your wiring diagram and make sure where you are supposed to hook up
the fuse holder wire. I THINK it connects to the always hot post of the starter relay.

I'm thinkin you'll be close as long as that harness is intact and present, installed on the back of that replacement panel. If I am wrong, someone please correct this,
as I have a 550 and 750, so I can't verify 100%...

Yea I agree, I found the image of a new one on eBay and it shows the fuse holder, it is a risk I take buying it without seeing the back but I'd hope he isn't selling me garbage. I'm optimistic and excited !

Use the site CMSNL to try to determine what you have and may not have in place. It is easy to navigate and has expanded diagrams for each assembly. It can help with the naming and function because it doesn't just look like crusty old electrical parts anymore
