Rear Brake is Trying to Kill Me!
« on: September 04, 2014, 03:33:27 PM »
Rear brake pretty much just snapped, locking up my rear wheel.

I'm glad I was pulling off a stop, so I was able to bring her to a stop on the side of the road. I've ordered most parts to fix. Can't for the life of me find the rear stopper bolt...

Could have been worse!

Glad your OK! But man look at the corrosion on that brake stay. Seriously inspect your bike for any more rust and rot. That part was not safe to be on your bike.

No picture shows the brake stay very well, but it's not very rusty - the rusty part is at the brake pedal end of the actuating rod.
The attaching bolt hole on the stay looks undamaged - it appears the bolt just came loose and fell off. This fastener has a split pin keeping the nut from falling off for good reason, this demonstrates why!

The picture must be decieving, the brake stay looks bad when it's blown up big, if the bolt fell out first what do you think caused it to snap?
No matter how many times you paint over a shadow, it's still there.

OR... the pin was not properly replaced last time the rear wheel was put on.  I'd say the rider was very lucky.  If you paid to have that wheel installed, you should be going to have a talk with someone.

More or less this.

Bike was tipped over a few weeks back. Since that happened, I noticed the rear was a little twitchy, but quick visual inspections didn't show anything. Fast forward a few weeks, the bolt just comes loose. Somehow the cotter pin fell out and the nut undid itself. I found the bolt on the side of the road and the washer on my swingarm. Lucky as hell as I was going slow, and a lesson learned. I guess TCLOCS is a thing for a reason. All the parts I need I am waiting to arrive. Replaced the nut with a nylock and installed a cotter pin.

This basically happened due to not having a cotter pin in place correct?

I believe the cotter pin is supposed to be some sort of back-up. In case he nut comes loose, the pin will at least ensure the bolt won't pull out and the rear is still semi-useable. When the pin falls out, nothing stops the nut from coming completely off, and the bolt backing all the way out. So then the entire rear brake just fails.

Best way to fix that is with some JD. (Sorry about the homicidal liver though)
