1973 CB500 oil pressure
« on: September 08, 2014, 03:11:30 PM »
Well, I have the garage find running and went for a short drive, about 1/2 mile and #3 carb is dumping gas and the oil light flickers at about 40mph.  Took of the carbs (AGAiN!!) ordered another rebuild kit so I should be able to fix that, I think the float valve is sticking.  Have taken them off and soaked/cleaned about 8 times and it's getting better.  my concern is the oil light.  I have finally found the oil pump and pressure switch and have read the threads about installing a gauge.  How do I do that?  Will that pressure switch transmit the actual pressure or is it just on/off?  Must I drill a hole in the crankcase for the line to go through?  How is the gauge lit?
Oh, one more thing, the bike bounces quite a bit above 35-40 mph.  Tires out of balance?

As you can no doubt tell this is my first rebuild, also my first Honda and I'm 68 years old!

ok, well the carbs are all off now anyway.  They were all gunked up from sitting for 15 or so years. This time I built a rack to hold the tank over the carbs so I can test them on the bench instead of on the bike.  It takes about 5 minutes for the carb to start dumping.  I thought I could clean them up enough to not buy four kits. Only had to buy 2 so far, plus a float valve.
Your right about it being a mess under that sprocket cover where the clutch cable attaches.  Plan on cleaning all that up tomorrow.
Does a new gauge come with a pressure sending unit?  Will it fit? are they standard?
Thanks for replying.

another thing, I did have to replace the petcock filter, I found it rolling around it the tank, Just put it in today so maybe that will prevent this happening again.

Oil Gauge: gauges don't have sending units, switches do. Gauges have displays. Stock gauges do not have this option, but aftermarket units do. Check out www.speedhut.com or www.jokermachine.com for an oil pressure gauge.
Why don't you show him your 'particular setup' as mentioned in http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=139087.msg1573459#msg1573459
Be a sport. Or am I asking an obtuse question again? Do it for him, not for me. ;D

Thanks for the inputs!  I have disassembled the carbs and cleaned them, more than once. The second time was trying to figure out where that little "extra spring" was supposed to go, had to take the others back apart for that.  Did do a tank flush and found the filter.  I believe I have the fuel problems on track now.  I'll check out the aftermarket gauge info. I have replaced the overflow tubes as well.
Thanks for the help!
