I don't see anything.  Point to the problem and post another pic.

that's the 12mm bolt on the end of one of your transmission shafts on a CB400F, pull the cover (drain oil first, it holds oil) to see what's going on....hopefully it's not bad....

Yeah it was the bolt that bolts on the gear in the bottom right hand corner, what does that gear do?

It is the drive gear for trans/primary...you should make sure there's no damage on the back of your clutch basket or on the bearing behind that gear. There are also probably now shavings throughout your motor so you'll want to clean the oil screen at a minimum.

It didn't happen whilst riding it happened when I was trying to start it. I dropped the oil and found no metal in the oil and when I took the engine cover off there was no shavings in there either, but I did find this little thing in there, any ideas as to what it is?

Look at the picture in reply #6.
Toward the top of the picture just to the right of center you can see what looks like 2 more of them.
Maybe the piece is a third one?????

Looks like a piece broken off the shift stopper (Y shaped piece behind the clutch surrounding the shift drum). It's been a long time since I've worked on 400F's so I'm really fuzzy =\

Exact same thing happened to me (after I rebuilt my engine).....Live and learn!
The really crappy part was that I had polished and clear coated that cover. I still have it hanging on the wall in my shop.

Bummer...:-(

I see,  and once it contacts the inside of the cover it just grabs the cover and spins right through.
