Sandcast bargains
« on: October 26, 2014, 10:10:18 PM »
I went on Ebay tonight and found these sandcast parts for sale,
10 bolt clutch cover, left euro handgrip, push/pull throttle cables, 2 cable carbs, 16" sandcast rim with a 4 hole hub, Sandcast hiway pegs, Sandcast rear disc brake and hardware for same, several sandcast ribbed airboxes, finned tappet covers, and a sandcast 4 into 2 exhaust for only $400. I wasn't going to mention the lower 1/2 engine case but WTH.

With all these fine parts for sale it should be no problem to build one from scratch. I just realized my brothers 74 has all these parts it must be sandcast too.

Yes, many ebay sellers have obviously invested in home foundries and are sand-casting some parts that, in my opinion, would better be made by other means. I think that throttle cables would be devilishly difficult to sand cast - and less usable than the standard wire type. To each his own, though.

It is an overused 'key' word for later parts by a few sellers out there.

That stuff drives me nuts. Bunch of scammers and usually way overpriced junk. I avoid buying from sellers who do that stuff out of principle, unless I'm in a pinch and it's a particularly hard to find part or a great price for whatever it actually is. I have sent messages to a few that seem to have genuinely mistaken what a part is, maybe came off a bike but was not original to that bike. If they correct it it declutters the search and helps them sell their stuff if it's listed accurately.

I wish ebay had a "flag for removal" feature like Craigslist, as I don't hesitate to use that on CL for anything that's spam. Ebay doesn't care though, as long as they get their 15%-20% of every sale. No idea how some people can afford to make a living primarily selling on ebay. It's good enough for me clearing stuff out for anything that doesn't sell on forums or CL, but I wouldn't try to make it a business model.
