Warning on EBAY Part
« on: November 14, 2014, 09:10:10 AM »
I bought a set of levers on Ebay from a Chinese company.
They look like this.

The levers will not fit the handle bars with the one inch size.
The hole is .040 thousandth too small. And they would be too large for 7/8 inch handlebars.

Photo on a section of actual 1 inch handlebar section below.

Do N OT buy these levers unless the AD is changed and the seller Showmoto has fixed this manufacturing problem!

OK... I do not want anyone else to buy them until this problem is fixed.

I fixed mine by drilling by hand with a 1 inch drill bit while they were clamped together. Luckily nothing went wrong or I would have nothing for my money spent.
The aluminum is soft and the drill bit can grab and turn the lever into junk.
You will have to clamp them in a vise.

Ah, I see. Surprised you were able to hone them out with a drill bit, but glad it worked out for you. At least they look cool!

Careful with those levers. I've heard horror stories of Chinese eBay levers that like to snap off or even engage the brakes without warning...

Huh. I was looking at similar ones for my new project. Let me know how the master works (feel and stopping wise).

Lucky,

Thanks for posting.  Here is my question with all the talent on this forum why do we even have to buy China made anything?

Got to be some solid works jocks on this forum who can do the design work.  As for the machining we got that in spades.

I rather have a blind Uber driver smoking weed than China brakes that do not stop or shocks that have a tendency to fall apart or brake off when I am going down the road.

there is a reason why they are so cheap to buy.....

Wait a bit longer, save a little more $$ and buy quality for your ride.
The bike will appreciate your thoughtfulness and return it to you with (s)miles down the road.

Chinese manufcaturers cannot be trusted. They can deliver a first batch according to specification. After that they can outsource to other small shpos where they do not do quality at all, copied parts that look like from the approved manufacturer.

I know since I work on global company producing industrial machines with mechanical, electro mechanical, control system with all electronics connected with cabling. With production in China, Europe and USA, too many parts manufactured in China to save money. I have many examples of more cost with junk parts that must be replaced after delivery.

A good approved part can be replaced by junk (copies) to save money. It will be very expensive in the end when the quality sucks. Most people do not like the label, Made in China. Made in USA or an European industrial country is much better. Producing high quality is unfortunately not in the Chinese soul.

If you drilled the clamped part out with a 1" drill, it can't clamp down on a 1" bar...

not illegal but like the states we cant compete with imports, for example Hyundai are bloody good cars with any and all options for a fair price, they used to be considered trash.

They really are. I keep saying that they are the the equivalent of Honda's from the 90's. Can't beat any Honda made from 90-98. The newer ones just don't hold up like those. The Hyundai's have slid right into that spot. Anyway, as far as China made products concerning Brake levers, it has occurred to me that this Chinese master is smaller and probably works better than the factory CB550/750 one did when new.

I do, the difference here is they are designed by an American company to very high standards and are not cheap by any means.

I am not anti-China I am pro quality control.  For all I know apple has an 8' tall robot with Steve Jobs consciousness installed into it.  One wrong move and your "replaced".

Joking aside apple and other companies spend the money on quality control and that is why they can be successfully while others fail.  Now when it comes to my life I don't want to take a chance on an unknown.

Alot of resellers find a manufacture on Alibaba and if the first batch looks good they let it roll.  It then goes to the lowest cost bidder.  You don't hear any stories of them inspecting the factory where there stuff is made, it just gets drop shipped to you.

Hope the $2.50 per hour worker is having a good day.  Without supervision you are rolling the dice.

Other quality companies get the quality from top notch quality control.

You can find hundreds of cheap Chinese motorcycle parts listed on eBay every day. They do a good job of marketing but fall flat on delivering quality. The ole adage, you get what you pay for, was never more true than this. If you're building junk, use junk parts, otherwise invest in your bike and get used (or new) quality parts.
You never see a motorcycle parked outside of a psychiatrist's office!
