Topic: ARGH. Slightly bent advancer shaft & jumping 2/3 timing...

Dammit, I can't get my advancer shaft straight enough to for 2/3 timing to be steady.
Been like that since I got it. Tried many times to straighten it using a homemade runout gauge & rubber mallet. Can't get it close enough. 
There must be a more elegant & effective method ??
Any good tricks?


Maybe switch to a 20lb sledge or a 6' extension/pry bar?

I can't imagine that if it was messing up 2/3, that it wouldn't mess up 1/4 also?

A new one may be in your future. A new point plate may be also.  The good ones are "TEC" brand.

not necessarily - 2/3 go first. can't recall exactly why. there's a Hondaman blurb on it somewhere...

the points plate is a new TEC so that's good

can't replace the shaft w/out splitting the case, no?

just double nut it and back it out.

Just run it by a machinist, or millwright, (with a dial indicator,and soft hammer), and bring a 6 pack
Felt pen mark the points plate if you remove it..
 Should be able to get it to.004 TIR or less.. Easily..

Damn, yeah. Should be way easier to get it straight with it out.

Really easiest to straighten,  still in the crank..

Once you get it out, you'll probably see an old, compressed o-ring on it.  Get a new one on there 
Unless someone knows size off-hand, you can mic the waist where it sits, and the OD of the shaft to get aprox o-ring size.

my gauge doesn't work well with it on-bike. no place to anchor it. figure if I might have a better shot with it on the bench...
