CB500 head gasket o-ring leak
« on: November 28, 2014, 06:18:53 PM »
I started remove the cylinder head and replacing the gasket, o-ring, pucks and what other seals I find. Im also pulling the cylinder and replacing the base gasket. I engine only has 2k orig miles and the inside looks new but because of the age I'll go ahead and replace the stem seals and lap the valves. The engine is not smoking so not messing with the rings, unless i break one.
I plan on cleaning up the ports and if there is any little mod I should do to get a little more performance let me know. Nothing radical.
I was thing about a Detroit 453 blower but it would get in the way of my headlight relay. :-\
thanks, Mark

just knock off any obvious casting dags, you might want to check the manifold to head alignment,if its wonky youll want to fix it.

get a one mm drill bit and clean all the grunge out of the pistons oiling holes under the oil rings

don't touch the combustion chambers!where the oil gallery from the surface of the barrel to the head meets,on the head side I like to chamfer that passages entry hole.

Here is a pic of the #4 cylinder, it looks worse than the photo. I ran fingernail and there were no grooves. The bike sat un-started since 1982 so above the rings moisture caused this. The other bores were fine so I decided to get a new set of rings, hone the cylinders and back together.
Im always open for ideas and suggestion, I have not looked into rings yet so I'm wondering if any particular type or brand are good choices.
Oh and cam chain tension and guide rubber are not hard but not as soft as the new one I installed on my 750. So I thought I should replace these now.

that's all I do with rag in the combustion chamber,i don't let the keepers fly though I also have a rag over the socket to trap them then place them as I go into a magnetic dish.

Yeah that's a better idea,
I didn't loose any of the keepers. I did put the head on a padded surface, don't want to accidentally bend the valves.

This happened today while painting, the cylinder head fell, only damage were dents in the fins and manifold. Im surprised the fins didn't break.
Found a set of manifold for $18.
It was one of those oh Sh*& moments, I'm sure the neighbors heard me.

Hello, is there suppose to have copper sealing washers on the cam cover bolts. I didn't notice taking apart, paint was covering them. I found 4 copper washers.

and make quadruple sure that tensioner is PERFECTLY seated down in the bottom of the case. There is a specific just sized right slot for it.  You can actually get it in there crooked, or partly in, etc and then with suprisingly little force the engine will go back together and you will feel like you did it all correctly. IF You have the barrels off, take the tensioner and just place it in where it goes.  Feel that little ..."snick" as it drops in at home there?  you gotta feel that later when you are buttoning it all up

Did you hear the engine run with the tensioner out of place. Curious what it sounded like. Also if it was running could the cam tesioner still be adjusted. Im always interested in diagnostics.
