That 0000 steel wool is Tops ! anything else come close ?
« on: December 14, 2014, 09:33:19 AM »
I've been enjoying the polishing quality of 0000 steel wool because I need to polish lot's of old aluminum & chrome by hand and that stuff sure works good !  8)
The thing I want to ask: is there any other commercially avail. dry type 'pad' product like it that'll create similar results ?  ??? I was just curious if I had a choice for hand polishing.

I have never tried any but they also make a bronze or brass wool also which boat guys like because there is no chance of rust from fibers left behind. Not sure if it is any softer.

That's a thought; how about a pad from 3M like super fine scotchbrite ?

NevRDull. GREAT product. Kinda moist however. Will not scratch or abrade like steel wool. Perfect for chrome.

I'm presently polishing some chrome oem pipes w/ the 0000 steel wool and trying my best to remove scratches(there's a Lot of'em  :( )& scuffs;I'm getting a 'work out'  :P ! When I'm done 'Rubbing'.. I'll finish up w/ my Never Dull.
I keep trying to remove those stubborn scuffs & scratches and that's making me tired..got to do it by hand up in my apt. and it's a grey, boring day. When I get some more energy I'll continue  ::) :P

Chrome and wire wheel cleaner for chrome..Aluminum wheel cleaner for aluminum (don't use the chrome cleaner on aluminum..as it dulls rather than brightens it (but gets it clean).

Mother's works well,   other types of polish  and rubbing compound do well also.

Depending on how much oxidization there is you might use wet-dry sandpaper. 3000 grit makes a nice finish  on lacquer.

I always have some 0000 on hand.  Somewhere I saw one of the old timers say that tiny fragments will get rubbed off in your chrome though.  I've taken a liking to Flitz.  Obviously good for chrome but I've used that stuff on headlights and scratched DVDs too with excellent results.

I been using FLITZ for years.. Blue runny paste comes in a tube.. Seems to pull out oxidation pretty good.  Similar to Simichrome and Solvol Autosol. I once had a water stain on a brand new pipe.. Cleaned it with Solvol and it left fine scratches..FLITZ won't scratch silver, let alone chrome..
For really rough white powdery aluminum, I heard Marvel Mystery oil work,  have not yet tried it.
But I think this thread started out with getting it smoother and ready for polish. ..not final polish.

I'm presently using the finest #0000 steel wool and it takes lots of rubbing.I wonder if  #000 or even #00 would take out heavier scratches w/o leaving a dull finish on the chrome head pipes ? I love the highly polished chrome of the #0000;that stuff removes fine scuffs/scratches w/ a good bit of effort.

Aluminium foil and water for rusty chrome, it works great and won't mark the chrome.  ;D

Do you usually apply it w/ a soft cloth for scratches in chrome ?

I'm pretty sure I used a paper towel last time to apply, then buffed with an old T-shirt.  I can't do it much as I'd like on account of my shoulders...

I used some marvell on a bike engine,  it did seem to remove the oxidation, but I  applied it with red scotchbrite. Is that cheating?
