Transmission gear question
« on: December 21, 2014, 02:22:48 PM »
Hello!

I was cleaning and checking all the gears for my rebuild im doing. Since all gears only can go one way i didnt really pay attention on how one gear was sitting. Its the one that interacts with the "sprocket gear". The one to the left on the picture i borrowed from here:
http://i313.photobucket.com/albums/ll384/rondison/Phaedrus/P9200013.jpg

The gear sits the same either way. It has a "q" in the qasting on one side.

Anyone knows how it should sit?

Best regards
Johan

I am confused with which one you are talking about. Numbered from the left starting with 1, which one is it? If you are talking about the far left, make sure after you install it that there is about a 2mm gap between it and the next one. If they are touching then it is wrong.  I have my cases apart and can send you a picture in the AM when I get home from work. Try pulling up a parts fiche from CMSNL, pretty detailed when zooming in.

Exactly! Far left or number 1. There's no rubbing either way I put it. But a measurement would be great! Really appreciate your help. Best regards, Johan

One of the "flanges" on that gear around the hub sticks out further from the face (first pic) than the other (second pic). The larger one faces the next gear. Hope that makes sense. Last pic is of the gap after installation.

I'm pretty sure I flipped on the wrong way on my rebuild. 5th only stays in place if you hold the shifter up with your foot

I'll be splitting and trying again soon. Thanks for this. Some where I found a good cross section of the tranny gears...I'll try to find it again

Went digging for this info...see below for the manual link. It's the Chapter11 file that the cross-section is from. I added screen-shots here. Hope it helps (both of us) HUGE THANKS Restoration Fan!

Excellent advice.  Thank you all.
Yeah, powdercoating would be nice but I don't have access to anyone I know or trust who could get me in immediately and we'll have the frame ready for primer by the weekend.

Also, MEGA thanks to Stoli for providing an online version of the 78 K8 F3 Service manual.  I was able to download it and put it up on Google Drive in a shared public folder.

Anyone who wants to download should be able to get at it with no needed security or passwords, but if you have trouble, feel free to let me know.  Here is the link:
