I want to use clear coat on my fuel tank and I'm asking what experiences you members have had w/ rattle can lacquer;is it resistant to fuel spills? I have some Duplicolor clear lacquer, how does that measure up to your clear coats ?
Thoughts ?

If you decide to use it try an inconspicuous spot first to make sure it is compatible with the existing finish first, you don't want a bad reaction going all out right off the bat.  Also try and make sure that all the silicone and wax etc is cleaned off as well as possible as lacquer is very susceptible to orange peel and fish eyes if you cannot add an element to help with that. May need a quick wet sand first also.

My experiences with "rattle can"- anything is it isn't fuel proof.  The stuff is just too "cheap" to hold up.  Like was suggested, try it on something you don't care about, let it dry for a week or so to fully cure, and splash it with fuel.  My bet would be you'll be disappointed.
I feel that the only finish that would be suitable would be a professional grade finish that uses a hardener.  I don't do painting so you'll need to get professional opinions, but I have used plenty of rattle can stuff.  >:(

My first try with rattle can on a tank was on my cb550, I used a metallic black and a clear coat both were rustoleum brand. I color sanded everything to get rid of the orange peal and it turned out great after I buffed and polished it up that is until the first time I spilled some gas on it. I immediately wiped the gas off with a rag and it took the clear coat off with it too and ruined it so I ended up having the tank professionally painted. That was rustoleum rattle can but my kid used duplicolor to paint and clearcoat his cbr600 but he got his paint and clear in a can and shot it with a spray gun and he never had an issue with gas getting on it.

Then his Duplicolor  worked out ok on fuel spills ?

He's not talking about the rattle can stuff, but rather the Duplicolor product that is more of a professional grade that has to be applied with a gun.

Back in the day when I had a furniture refinishing business and made my living with a spray gun my go to clear for polished aluminum and other compatible motorcycle bits was Dupont lacquer 380s.  I need to find some more of that stuff if they even still allow it . So much water based stuff nowadays.

Spraymax 2K comes in a 2-part rattle can, AND is fuel proof! ;)
Used it on my K8 tank with no issues and it came out great.

2-part means there are 2 separate compounds in the can.
you have to activate/mix them before it can be used.

I used duplicolor enamel on my tank and side covers.
It was 75F in my spraybooth.  Did the clear coats in under 2 hours.   3 thin coats and 2 thick coats.
Wet sanded w rubber block 2500 a few days later.  came out great.

It works surprisingly well indeed. You can get it at any automotive paint supply joint. I highly recommend it!
I use my air paint sprayer to apply it though.

I saw a nice trick where you put a  paper cup inside the bottle to put mixed  epoxy in.  You loose volume but have less clean -up.

This was rattle can Krylon that was followed up with the 2K from my air gun.

With those results, I was kicking myself for not just using the gun to paint the base color.  :D

I have used the 2K over Rustoleum  Universal Pearl Enamel, easy to use and looked good when done.  It  is basically a one time use product though
