Somebody Make This ...
« on: January 12, 2015, 07:51:48 AM »
A thread for ideas by people who lack time, money, or skills to make them.

Inspired by the Reddit of the same name, this is a repository for ideas for things we need and want to make our bikes better (better handling, easier to service or repair, custom parts we all want etc) but no one makes. The big idea is that someone can design the thing and those that want it can club together in a group buy or similar to get it made.

It could be:
- a custom part you want but can't get, like (or not like) Benjies Cafe Racer Parts,
- a new innovative product like Motogadget,
- a service, like CB750Faces.com,
- ideas for tools (have you rigged something up that could be useful for the masses?),
- a hard to find spare part that needs a new production run,
- something else ...

OK,  I'll admit to my stupidity...What's a "bub" nut?   I never found a "bub" on my bike that needed removing.
intrigued by the wail...seduced by the scream.

Sounds like a great idea :D , but the other side "somethingmade" sounds more like. Look at me. See how great I am. ::)

Does anything of value seriously get made through this??

While we are on the subject.
I have a few parts designed (hub, spacers) that I do not have the ability to machine (lathe, mill). If any machinist would be interested. Let me know.

I have thought of doing something similar so of course I love the idea.  No reason it can't be done.  The only downside is that it is expensive for designers / machinist to do small runs.  Crowd funding might be one solutions to that problem.

Here we just ask if someone would be interested and if enough people respond it gets made.

You bash the idea then ask for something you need? Hilarious. You made me think - spacers. Everyone is always going on about spacers for wheels, suspension etc etc. spacers for common mods is an idea. Maybe a bad one, but an idea all the same. What are the spacers you need?

Well said. It might range from a batch production of a few dozen components to a full blown kickstarter campaign.

I didn't bash the idea. Just the site. The Idea is a good one, and has already resulted in an offer of help to check on what I asked about.

Which answered my question. Yes, It can work!

I do not want to go off in too many directions looking for help. If the current offer falls through I will ask again.

Well there is always the service offered section:

http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?board=50.0

And there are member who make parts for others, I know at least one case when Cal made motor mount bolts for another guy.

It is often what Chewy said, just one piece or five pieces and it has to be done as favor, because  tooling and such on one piece would be way too expensive.  That's why most of the aftermarket shops and makers offer only certain parts.

Gotta say jeeps are different, you can build the whole CJ from aftermarket parts :)

If you can work a CAD package and export a 3D file, these guys will machine almost anything for you:

ProtoLabs.com

Their online quote system automatically points out issues with the design so you can revise it and re-upload. I use them a ton at work and their service is amazing. They do rapid prototyping too

I think he may have meant hub wrench, may be talking about the pin drive type to get the wheel bearing covers out. I have an idea for one, the stumbling point was getting the square. Hole into it, think I have that solved..could have several pin center on one tool to door most of them..
Any interest.

Sounds interesting, but not totally following what it is. Can you post a link of something similar or a sketch? Or an image of what the thing it undoes is?

Think of it as a modified pin wrench commonly used with angle grinders. The square pins really are tricky to tool for.

Where can I get access to decent CAD software at a reasonable price?  Doesn't solidworks cost 8k and up?

Oil jets for 750 heads. (550 heads too?)

I looked into it but since I do not have CAD software I couldn't do drawings, and the several people I asked...well, the one I gave dimensions and pictures to has not done it since I sent him the info..

It needs to be done.

I have the ones I need for my build...however, I did a trade with a forum member in which I sent him a head...and it was missing one of the oil jets which I was never able to find in the shop. I never was able to get one for him and I don't know if he was ever able to get his hands on one. Just seems like such a simple part that someone could make a bunch and get them out in the market.

Thanks for the offer. At this particular moment I have zero dollars to my name so there will be no buying anything for a bit...
