1978 CB550 Rear Brake Light Sensor Spring
« on: February 01, 2015, 10:05:52 AM »
Can someone send some detailed pics on where the rear brake light spring attaches to? The rear brake light sensor is already installed on the bike but I don't think I have the correct spring and I cannot tell where the spring attaches to on the foot brake lever.

Also, does anyone know where I can purchase the correct spring? I ordered one online but it seems to be way too short to connect to anything!

Here's how it's attached on my 76, pretty sure it's the same for a 78. Also, BikeBandit sells the springs brand new here (it's number 11 in the picture):

It's a little motor and likes having the tits revved off it.

mrfish2, my brake lever does not have that hole mounted to it. I recently bought the bike used but it does not look like that tab with the hole was removed from the brake lever. Maybe the 76 and 78 are different?

I've owned a fair number of motorcycles, they all pretty much look like that.  My '77 looks like that for certain.

Pash - here you go. The spring does mount differently on the '78. It attaches to the brake pedal cam

The brake pedals are NOT all the same. The F model spring attaches on the cam, inboard of the swinging arm.

'Then' and 'than' are completely different words and have completely different meanings. Same with 'of' and 'have'. Set and sit. There, their and they're. Draw and drawer. Could care less/couldn't care less. Bought/brought FFS.

He said his is a 78, and they quit making the F model in 77. They're still similar in the way the spring attaches, but a few of the parts are still different. I edited my first post to the correct parts diagram.

calj737, can you send a picture of how the spring mounts to the brake pedal cam? Also, do you know where to order the correct spring for the 1978 model?

I'm not at my bike now, but the '78 is different than the rest. I don't have a clear picture but maybe you can see in this.

There is a motor mount that also holds the clutch cable. The little bracket for the stop switch gets bolted with the motor mount. The spring then goes on the inside of the frame and hooks on to a notched "lever" that is shared with the brake rod that actually pulls the brake arm on the hub.

Hopefully this drawing helps. My handwriting sucks, sorry, haha.

Hope your bike is the same as my '78 CB550K

But showed the wrong picture. I was showing the other brake arrangement, there only are two.

Glad I could help. If you need more pictures let me know. I'm back home and with the bike. Could take more shots in the morning.

Hi guys, I am at the same point now, but all the pictures you have shared here seem to not be available anymore. Do you think you could share once again? Just cannot get the way how to get it connected to that rocker arm.

Thank you!

Don't have a picture but this link is still relevant.

It connects to the cutout of part 12. so the spring passes behind the frame tubes to reach it.
