Topic: cant get Bronze valve guides in the UK

Rebuilding my CB400f engine which is going to be a cafe racer and i need bronze valve guides and also valve springs tried David silver Spares  they don't do them, tried TTR400 none in stock and every thing that i need is in the USA. please could you guys help me out as i live in the UK. And put a link so that i can order these parts many thanks in advance Richard

Why exactly do you need bronze guides..?  You know that cast iron guides last longer..?  I'm waiting for someone to make 5mm valve stem  conversion cast iron guides for a big bore engine I have...   Look at reply 33 from Mike Reick, he's the best one here to comment on the guides...

cast iron guides last longer than bronze? says who. bronze are much better, steel valve stems run better in them, no corrosion either. We're not talking about brass. Why do you think they make bronze guides? bronze valve seats are better too, especially with today's gas.

Says  Mike Reick, one of the best head experts around and the best when it comes to CB750 honda's, go ask in the high performance section, he's a member. Why do they make bronze guides..?  Because they are better in racing applications that are changed out  far more often than on our street bikes,

bronze guides pulls heat out of the valve better which isn't a bad thing when you are racing.

  thats why   There are lots of parts developed for racing that don't last as long as their street based counterparts for this very reason. Just saying "bronze guides are better" doesn't make it so, did you read the link I posted..?  Go ask Mike personally, his work is renowned world wide and i'll certainly take his expert, first hand advice over opinion any day.... I don't offer bad advice on something as important as an engine, I am putting together one very expensive, big bore HIPO engine myself, when the new 5mm valve stem conversion cast guides are made, i will be using those over bronze for longevity, my bike will NEVER see the abuse a race bike gets on the track, even though it will be fast....

I don’t know who Mike Reick is and I don’t care. I’m sure that I have more experience in cylinder head and valve train development and research than he does. I’ve spent over 40 years including experimental work with motorcycle, aircraft, automotive, marine, and even locomotive engines. I’ve done endurance testing of engines and components, dynamometer testing, and design work too, and I’ve been involved in building and testing for racing programs.

Yeah, they work great on the track, but I've heard they require frequent valve adjustments due to the valves pounding into them?

Way to big note yourself whilst ignoring one of the best {whom you don't even know}, if not the best head work guys around, Mike is an expert with CB heads {not just CB's either}, known world wide for it. If you'd been around here a little longer you may have found that out.  Remember we are talking CB750 engines, this is the SOHC forum..! The cast guides have been known to do 100,000+ miles without needing changing out, I was just saying that he {the OP} doesn't "need" bronze guides and that is correct..
And the "I don't know what an expensive CB engine is" , as far as CB750 engines go, mine is about as expensive as it gets, you can't get better parts anywhere, that comment is laughable, you have absolutely no idea what i have...?  Your baseless assumptions make you look like an ass and your attitude stinks..

Please do not just spit the dummy and disappear.
Sounds like you have mountains of experience.(according to the above)
So stand up for yourself and put your case forward.
I for one am interested in your argument and would relish your opinions on things discussed.
From observations of other unrelated posts this can be a rather biased forum to express different views to the mainstream. There can sometimes be packs of slathering diehards ready to rip you to bits. But if you stand your ground and silence them with results then things can change.

Moe, he only has to stand up for himself because he was an arse about it, I wasn't trying to provoke the type of response that he gave, It was ridiculous, he hasn't got a clue about what I own engine wise, I have stuff he wouldn't have even heard of.  Mike Reick is the best there is when it comes to 750/4/500/550/4  head work, the forum is full of his work, actually, so is the rest of the world... Bias has absolutely nothing to do with it, I would say the results speak for themselves, he looks after quite a few racers here too with very fast, successful, championship winning bikes......   If he has as much experience with these engines as Mike has then I would also like to hear what he has to say but it sounds like he doesn't have much respect for guys that have done previous development work for the Honda's, even Russ Collins son is a member here, I wonder if he's even heard of RC, Russ was the pioneer of development of these bikes...?  "I don't know what an expensive engine is", I'm still laughing at that one....
