When you get your solenoid reinstalled....

I haven't looked at the wiring diagram for the F1, so I assuming it has the safety configuration of the later F2s and F3s with a live wire running to the start switch. If so, the headlight is on the same circuit as the starter circuit. When you press the starter button it redirects the juice from the headlight to the starter and the headlight goes out. If your headlight works and then goes out when you press he starter button, you are getting juice on the circuit and it appears your starter button is working. That is your test.

If the starter button is good and the circuit has power, your problem probably lies in the safety circuit. That safety feature works by robbing the starter circuit of a ground unless the clutch or neutral switch are engaged. You can route around it by running the ground wire from the solenoid directly to any ground wire (green) or the frame. If it works now, your problem is solved. If it doesn't, your starter is toast.

Of course, if the starter circuit is like the earlier circuit, your starter circuit is a ground between the starter button and the handlebar. That's a bit more involved bypass for the safety feature because everything is reversed from the later model. If that's the case, let me know and I'll detail that one. Or better, just kick it.

Diagram for the F1. The is the design that just has the single diode, not the full "safety module".

Yeah, that's the one. When the diode goes bad you get the neutral light every time you pull in the clutch.

One thing I would add. If you go through all that and still don't have a working starter, before you buy a new starter take your switch housing apart and clean the starter button contact pin and plate. They corrode. Watch out for all the teeny little parts.

the solenoid gets 12 v from battery and when i push the starter button i get 12 v on the yellow/red wire coming from the button but nothing happens.. is that a dead solenoid then?

Before you dig into the solenoid, connect one of the low amp connectors to + and the other one to the - on the battery.  It should click the solenoid, ie close the circuit.  If that happens, the solenoid is ok, and your problem is either diode, neutral swtich or clutch switch.

As you can see from the diagram, the solenoid is not just + and - but on the - side is the "safety feature"

Not really that is only half of the solenoid. It could click but the large contacts may not be working. I have seen this before in my short life ;)
That is why this worked :)

The first thing I do with a new to me bike is go through every connector from headlight to tail light. After so many years crud builds up then you start dropping a half volt here and a half volt there then things stop working.

Of course the best way is to check the solenoid for continuity, but I did not want to make it complicated.  ;)
