When you get your solenoid reinstalled....
I haven't looked at the wiring diagram for the F1, so I assuming it has the safety configuration of the later F2s and F3s with a live wire running to the start switch. If so, the headlight is on the same circuit as the starter circuit. When you press the starter button it redirects the juice from the headlight to the starter and the headlight goes out. If your headlight works and then goes out when you press he starter button, you are getting juice on the circuit and it appears your starter button is working. That is your test.
If the starter button is good and the circuit has power, your problem probably lies in the safety circuit. That safety feature works by robbing the starter circuit of a ground unless the clutch or neutral switch are engaged. You can route around it by running the ground wire from the solenoid directly to any ground wire (green) or the frame. If it works now, your problem is solved. If it doesn't, your starter is toast.
Of course, if the starter circuit is like the earlier circuit, your starter circuit is a ground between the starter button and the handlebar. That's a bit more involved bypass for the safety feature because everything is reversed from the later model. If that's the case, let me know and I'll detail that one. Or better, just kick it.
