Davies Motorsport - Honda 500/4 wins CRMC ACU 500 race
« on: April 08, 2015, 05:59:24 AM »
Hello All - it is while since I posted on here.

Bit of excellent news for SOHC enthusiasts - Alan Oversby won the ACU 500 race on the Davies 500/4 at the first round of the CRMC series last weekend. This is the first time that John and the guys have won the premier race of the CRMC series, having tried valiantly with the 500-Twin for a number of years.
Alan lead from start to finish, beating Mike Cooper on the Craven Concrete Manx Norton and also Ollie Linsdale on the equally rapid Enfield 500, that Ian Lougher campaigns at the Classic TT. And this is in silenced form!

Alan will be riding the 500/4 at a number of CRMC meetings over the year as well as the Pre-TT and the Classic TT. So keep an eye out, and an ear open, for the screaming-four at both events if you are there. There will be a few new & 'interesting' mods to the engine this year, which I will post up when they are fully up and developed :-)

I will try & put up the race results for the Pre-TT and Classic TT too for anyone whom is interested.

Congratulations Alan. Nice win on a beautiful bike.
Do you have any more pictures of the bike.

Thanks for keeping us posted Pete.

Cheers

Sorry, this one is Alan. The other is 350 & 500 with sponsored van prior to Classic TT
Note the different fairing. CRMC won't let John run the less conventional looking one but Classic TT will and it really helps with the aeros on the long straights on the IoM.
See other pic with William Dunlop behind the bubble.

I prefer the classic look of the fairing shown in the first picture.
Who makes it?

John Davies at Davies Motorsport in the UK. They still make the more classic look ones. The less conventional one is purely for racing to get the rider in and behind it. It makes a significant difference to top speed on the IoM

This is one thing that DMS are introducing for 2015; their own clutch actuator to replace the worm drive original. It gives a more positive feel to clutch and eliminates the front sprocket cover and actuator casting. Simple and tidy. Available to buy too, if anyone is interested?

congrats pete, nice to see all the dev work paying off.
BTW, built a similar clutch actuator on my 500/4 racer some eight years ago... but mine didnt win any races :)
how much power is the bike putting down these days?

Last years was topping out about 68bhp unsilenced. I don't think that JD has the new engine yet for the 2015 road season. The aim is to get to 70+ to help be competitive at the Classic TT. It needs to be faster than a single to negate the need for a pit stop and try and close the gap on the Paton on top speed. Alan having a longer season on the 500 will help with familiarity and set up before the event this year. I know there are already some changes to the set up after Pembrey. I think the aim is to try and break a 110mph lap at the Classic TT. Al managed 107 from a standing start last year before he had a mechanical, as did William. Pembrey was a great start and gets the guys a longer run in to the road events.
