Why not change to an electronic ignition and ditch the points?

No real advantage if you know how to set points in my opinion. Nothing you can fix on the side of the road with a faulty electronic ignition. I did have a pack on an xs650 that actually belonged to paMco  Pete and was his rider for 15 years that the engine was due for a top end but the pamco sparked so hot it would zap right through fouled plugs that wouldn't have left a stocker stranded hundreds of miles prior so it sold me on his xs650 setup. It did have upgraded coils as well to though...

That was my faithful '78/E XS650! Had that when I lived on the beach in NC. My wife to be and I would use it to ride down to the point and gather sea shells. We would then go pub crawling with it at night to all the really great bars along the shore line. It always got us home. It was also the development "mule" for the very first PAMCO ignition. Where is it now?

Hello Pete! First it got some new pipes as the Kerner that was on it had given up the ghost . The salty beach air explains alot!

Pardon the facial expression it was like chilly 35 degrees out if I recall Lol, .
I rode it like that for maybe a year and then she got a makeover-

Attached is a pic how you Prolly remember it and then after a year or so it got caffinated. I still have your seat!!!! If you want it for nostalgia let me know :-).
I sold it to some banker in charlotte 6 years ago for a ridiculous amoun of frogskins. I have seen it up for sell on craigslist once since then.

As you can see your rubber mounted oil pressure gauge made it through the transformation lol. Was a great bike for me and even with a "tired" engine I never noticed compared to other xs650 s I have owned and ridden. The wiring was really "interesting" lol. Relays upon relays ...Thank good you were kind enough to print and store a modified schematic under the seat for your improvements.:-)
Thanks for sharing I enjoy herein bikes histories and we're they had been. That one was a school bus for me . Way cooler than riding the cheese as a child though!

Messed with mine some today whiteorbs to try and fix that rich condition. Under normal operation it kind of sputters a little at 1/4 throttle (just cruising around town), so I took the air filter out to see how it did. It seemed to sputter a little less and cruise a little smoother without the air filter but it also liked to backfire at WOT. Any luck with yours?

To much family stuff going on to sneak off to the lab.
We're all of your floats pissing or just one or two?
Synced your carbs lately?
Check the numbers on your idle jets?

78whiteorbs,

Thanks for posting the pic of the original. That brings back the memories of life on the beach with my dear wife. She passed away last year, God bless her soul.

Sorry to hear and you are most certainly welcome.

So pulled the racr and low and behold some the float levels where all way jacked up.  Don't know what I was smokin....but the floats just weren't set right and they were doing exactly what they should been doing for those levels...

I removed floats first and blew through the fuel lines.the new needle valves and seats shut the flow perfect. On the second fuel line there was a leak when the floats where pushed in. It was coming from the seal where the seat touches the carb body. There is a little or ing in there around the seat. I twisted it just a little and presto!. Used auxiliary tank to test and perfect no leaks.....!

Only problem now is the stupid Viton cheap gaskets the large round ones that one guy sells for cheap on ebay, seam to have stretched or something from the ethanol so now I can't get the bowls to seal up nice. Gonna order some oem tomorrow or cut my own our of some gasket material. anyone see a problem usin g gasket material over the rubber?

Just one keeps pissing out gas if I leave the petcock on while it sits. Haven't been able to get it to idle so I haven't been able to vacuum sync it. The pilot jets are all stock size 38's. My float levels could possibly be far enough apart from each other that it doesn't have a consistent level in the bowls. I'll be checking that again soon.

As far as the gaskets, might as well try them and see. I think as long as they didn't extend inside the bowls it should be fine.
