Nice looking machinery! Good job thinking "outside of the box" on the alternator- I would not have thought to drive it from the sprocket.

Yep what a diff 10 yrs of development makes.It got 30 hp over the SOHC in stock trim. I made this 4-2-1 pipe and changed the carbies like RSC did back in the day. It is so much faster than any SOHC I have ever seen. We are developing this one for both my sons. Am now in the process of reproducing the dry clutch setup from RSC.

And these engines are so smooth.......

Finally got the engine om the bench, starting from scratch with bog standard engine. First modifications, Accent ignition, Yoshi 1970 style 4 into 1, and CR31's.
71 rwhp for now. Next step 823 Yoshi kit and inlet valves.

Just want to make sure I am understanding you correctly.  You have a completely stock cb750 engine with the only modifications so far being a Accent ignition, Yoshi 1970 style 4 into 1, and CR31s?  And you made 71 rwhp in that state? Nice.

Curious what year motor are you staring with?  K0, K1, K2...?  I'm interested since stock power levels slowly and consistently dropped over the first 5 or so years.

I look forward to hearing more.

1974 K2 engine. stock rebuild. Yes you understand correct. These are the mods. Pipe works very good, build it myself after the 1970 Yoshi. This helps a lot, ignition is soooo important on these enignes. Carb's no comment just outstanding, but.............................it is the combo of the parts that make it work. Next step 823 kit and bigger inlet valves but still oem camshaft. Want a cam with duration, not lift.

Green line was with carbies mounted but not yet adjusted, see big dip at 6500rpm. Red is where we are now.

I am certainly looking forward to your progress.  I am particularly interested in knowing more about your Yoshi copy exhaust.  Would you mind giving me an idea as your method of exhaust building?  Is your version a copy of the early Yoshi "stove pipe" version with the sharp cut and weld bends in the tail section?  The early Yoshi head pipes were all heated and hand bent if I recall correctly.  Did you do the same?

Also, what is your ultimate goal with this engine?  Are you planning to build it gradually and test along the way or build the "finished" motor in one shot?  It's great that you did a "before" dyno tune for a baseline for the after...

This is the pipe I was trying to copy, the first one. No cuts and welds but a bend pipe. I was not able to bend the primaries as done by Yoshi, but build my set from machine bend pipes. With a big collector.


Here on the bike while testing the pipe and dry clutch set-up for the first time, a few seasons ago.

My ultimate, nice of you to say it this way because I refer to this bike as my "Ultimate", goal is to have a good fast, but also reliable engine. In my experience it is not wise to go after high HP figures due to the stress on the engine. I try to keep that stress factor as far away as possible. Is one of the reasons I still use, and plan to do so, a oem cam. Do however use new springs and Ti-retainers and Ti nuts on the adjuster bolts in order to keep the stress as low as possible. So I do not build the motor in one shot, but evolve gradually.

   Interesting. I picked up an aftermarket Yoshi copy exhaust to try out.  I am looking into putting together a K0 frame based road racer and if I use a proper road race style long tank/seat set I'd be most interested in keeping everything visually in +/- pre 1971 style.  The head pipes on my header are no where near the flowing hand gentle hand bends of a real Yoshi, something he apparently felt strongly about.  Mine has a minimal baffle in it, but it's there.  I bought it barely used, and at half of what they are going for new, so I figured worth a try, leaning clearance and mandatory belly pan clearance should be very good.

   Regarding your interest in using a stock cb750 cam, have you considered swapping in a K0 cam?  They had a little more get up and go than the early/mid 70s versions.  Just a though.

   I am really impressed with all the modifications and custom machine work you have done for this bike, and others.  Lots of skill and fine tooling there.

   I am curious, what offset are you using on your triples?  I am trying to get an idea where I should start on my bike.  Factory late cb750 45mm offset triples seem to be a minimum recommendation with down to 30mm being used with apparent success.   Actually any info regarding your experience with tuning your bike for good handling would be very useful.  Rake/trail, forks, springs, shocks, brakes, any of it.

Please keep us updated on your new engine, I am very interested. ;)

Hi George,

Looks like a pipe that Carpy sells. IMO a nice looking pipe but no Yoshi. But always good for try out, and for a good price well done. Mine is also minimal baffled. Regarding the cam, yes I have but wanting and finding one are two different matters. I can have one custom hard welded if in real need.
Regarding tuning the roadholding of the bike, first one must consider what one wants with it. Road use, cruising, drag racing, roadracing etc. Once you have made your choice things really get interesting because it also matters what you prefer the bike to behave like.
I am giving my opinion based on my experience and expertise. There will never be a concensus about this. When racing a CB 750 K0-K6 a few things a bound to happen. You'll be weaving all over the place and when coming out of corner at considerable speed expect a terrifying speed wobble. Make sure all bearings are setup well, swingarm pivot and headstock. Tyres, the better they are the worse the bike tends to behave. Adjust spring loads, check alignment etc. Next step loose that swingarm, never found one to my liking and decided to build my own after the Dresda swings but stronger and longer. Mine is 40 m/m longer than stock. I use longer (360m/m)shocks (Koni). Trail on the 750 is too short, hence the prob's with wobbling and shaking. I use 45 m/m off-set. I use 18"front and rear. Use 35 m/m front from 1st gen DOHC 900. Much longer lowers which give more overlap. Added a stabilizer, but biggest improvement is a 20 m/m front axle. Makes the front much stiffer and the fork's tendency todeform under braking is next to zero. Another point for improvement is the way the engine is mounted in the frame, not good and under acceleration tends to move about in frame. Solve that and you'll have a safe and predictable bike. Could go on for hours but you have some to think about. Rob
