2008 Triumph Thruxton

I picked up a 2008 Triumph Thruxton (air-cooled, carbureted) previously modified by my buddy.
As acquired, it had aluminum bodywork (fender, Triton-style tank, seat cowl), Motogadget Blaze signals and tiny gauge (set into headlight nacelle), British Customs wide rear wheel kit, rear sets, Cone Engineering mufflers, Superbrace fork brace, and some sorry-looking Chinese shocks.

The ride quality of the Chinese shocks left a lot to be desired.  I suspect that the reservoirs in the shocks were fake.  I decided to upgrade to a pair of Ohlins Black Line. The improvement was HUGE.

The bike had been sitting for a couple of years, so the gas had turned.  The petcock was corroded beyond use.  Thankfully, aluminum gas tanks clean relatively easy.  Even after a flush, new fuel lines, new filler gasket, new Pingel petcock, and complete carb clean, it was still running rough on one carburetor, so I swapped out for a cleaner set of carburetors in the shop.  BAM, the bike runs great now!

Thanks!  It's coming along.  I'm going to replace the tires as they are pretty roached -- cracks all over the rubber on the front tire.

I guess I was going through Triumph withdrawal.  I previously owned a newer, liquid-cooled Thruxton R.  It had a great motor (loads of torque) but felt extremely heavy.

That front tire pattern looks familiar, it's not the same brand as the rear, is it?

The carburetors are stock for Thruxton/Bonneville.

The front is an Avon Roadrider (I think) and a Metzeler rear.

It's a bit simpler than the liquid-cooled Thruxton R I used to own (the red one).  Less power but something fun for shorter rides.

More of a replacement.  I sold the red Thruxton R about two years ago.

Yikes. Mine didn’t pogo but it was not compliant at all. Way over sprung. Now it soaks up the bumps in the road and rebounds at the proper rate too. Good suspension can really improve the character of the bike - as your wife likely agrees.

I would like to upgrade the front forks by installing Ohlins cartridges but they are presently on back-order through (at least) the end of the year.  I even tried ordering them from a European supplier, but they did not actually have them in stock (though their website said they did  >:().

Next mod - replacing the stock wheels with lighter weight talon hubs laced to Excel rims.  Just got the wheels laced and trued by Buchanan's.  Pics to come.

Thanks!  Along with the rotors, my buddy Philippe at Beringer hooked me up with some front and rear calipers (six-piston front), MC, etc.  I can't wait to install the new hardware.

I have the smaller twin piston calipers on my 550 and it is almost overkill. It brakes like a modern sport bike.
