Yamaha DS6 New Project FINI THE END MY FRIEND
« on: June 02, 2015, 05:27:41 AM »
Restored a 1971 Honda CT90 for a customer over the past 6 months or so, finished, delivered and he was happy so he gave me another project-1969 Yamaha DS6 250cc street scrambler.

The CT on the way out

The DS6 on the way in

Plan is to do a restoration but without spending a boatload of bucks.  Owner wants to keep that gold color but the paint job is not good enough to flip the bike  so he is getting it redone by a real painter not a spray can painter. Tank, side covers, fork ears will be gold,  chrome that is badly pitted will be blasted and either painted silver or black.  Exhaust is immaculate but the heat shields were rusted and have been painted a gloss black-looks awesome in contrast with the chrome and gold..

Some pics

I just accidentally deleted half this post so I'll continue later...Larry

Any idea as to when it last run and are you doing a complete engine rebuild ?  I like those old 'scrambler' high pipe style bikes. Good Luck with it Larry.  Eric

The owner(a highly skilled Triumph/HD mechanic who doesn't work on Japanese bikes ???) had it running recently so the engine will go untouched unless something out of the ordinary pops up.  thx for the input...Larry

More photos

The Good:  clean and dent free tank that only needs a real painter.  fork ears, side covers and headlight shell also good but need a good sanding and repaint.  new seat cover. excellent exhaust.  useable fenders(not fendersrule though). good rear brake cable as a replacement is cost prohibitive and practically unobtainable.  good throttle cable.

The Bad:  frayed clutch cable but I have already sourced one for $30.  Missing front brake cable.  Bad air filters(may have to go to pods ::) if replacements cannot be found.  totally dry rotted tires.  Missing voltage regulator cover.  Chain guard, kick lever and other parts have the plating peeling off(will either be painted silver or black).

The Ugly:  nothing really.   Should make a fine, old two smoker when done....Larry

Hey Larry here is a number for Danke Yamaha in Battle Creek. Eccentric old fella who has been is business for many, many years, was at one time the largest seller of Yamaha units in the region and was also a regional parts supplier as well as a racer. Claims to have a basement full of early and 1960's and later Yamaha NOS parts. Has many cool used bikes both Jap and British and some still in crates I hear. I have not had luck buying any bikes from him but he may be sitting on something you need. I can pick up and ship if needed.  http://www.yellowpages.com/battle-creek-mi/mip/danke-motorcycle-co-454587962?lid=454587962

Good to see another old smoker being put back on the road.  Consider the IRC tires, recently bought them for my RD350.  Made in Japan and very affordable.

Thanks Steve, but this bike would have used the universal type of on/off tire that the old street scramblers had.  You know,, not knobby but suitable for an occasional off road jaunt...Larry

universal not enduro.   Universal tires were street legal, enduro were off road only.

Good to see you back at it, Larry!

thanks, been a long time- I still at least 4 unfinished projects of my own.  I most likely will not finish them so I'll most likely sell as is the unfinished 400, 750s and 250...Larry

Since this is a budget type of restoration and I still want it to look awesome when done I spent several hours hand scrubbing the frame and subsequently brush painting it with Rustoleum Satin Black.  Looks decent and saved hours of time removing all parts.

Found this problem with one of the carbs, bit out of round outer and who knows how the lower inlet got dented

but the fender doesn't rule :(   I have another thread started on the bike Steve, plan is to get it road worthy, ride it as is while gathering parts to return it to stock.  Will pay 1500 for a clear title, rebuilt motor, electronic ignition 1965 650 Triumph, according to my friend if I put 1000 into it to bring it back to stock I should be able to get 4 to 5K...Larry

Would anyone happen to have spec info on this bike, specifically fork oil capacity, trans viscosity recommendation and timing(Yammies were usually 1.8 or 2mm BTDC is my recollection). I am having a bit of trouble locating desired info on Al Gore's web...Larry

Love the 'EL-C.' Larry  8);how's it been loading all different bikes in the back? Do you have a trailer for big stuff and ATV's ? The DS6 is a great project too;I hope you get fortunate w/ the primary case.

Loading on the El is a bit of a pain, have to have two people.  When I went to look at the Triumph , this trailer was there.  How cool is this for a one man operation 8)

What is the reference to primary case Bill??

That trailer looks to be on the same line as 'MCRider's' one man operation;Nice  ;)
I was looking at an earlier post of yours when water was coming out of the drain plug on the primary case/trans. ..  I hope the PO didn't run the bike w/ water in there in the past otherwise you may have more parts to replace.

Far as I know the Yammie sat for a looooong time. It was given to the present owner(Triumph/HD mechanic} who got it running but never rode it. Think I'll be OK,   fill the trans, get it running, ride it a couple times and then drain and refill....Larry

Finished the gauges, should have been a satin, almost plastic like finish but he wanted shiny-so shiny it is.

Exhaust finished and right mounted but left has to be off in order to fill the trans ???

Waiting on tires(tyres) and wheels so I can at least roll the Yammie off the lift and get my Sabre ready to sell...Larry

Waiting on wheels(the owner is painting them black :-\) and all body parts(he is having them painted either gold or burgundy), meanwhile I pulled out the old Yammie dial indicator and set the timing to 1.6 btdc(not sure if that is correct as I cannot find info but it should get me in the ballpark).  When was the last time anyone used one of these?????

Found a burnt point wire and had to make up a new one used the old ends.  The left wire was redone.

Larry,I still have my very accurate 'Suzuki' Made in Japan dial indicator timing kit from back then;I even have it in the orig. box w/ different length ends that thread into it.The last time I used it was when I owned my last Yam. RD350B. How's the condition of your ign. points(pivot shafts, etc.) ? I imagine those points aren't easy to find oem NOS  ::)
