popping after upgrades - timing weird
« on: June 07, 2015, 03:49:33 PM »
So got new clamps for intake boots and new boots for airbos. Stock airbox setup. Bike ran decent before I replaced clamps.

Also had emulsion tubes someone drilled two of them .040 over. I drilled the other two to match.

Once reassembeled, started to get pops out of the 3-4 muffler (I have 4-2s)

Thought I would check timingt with my new light gun. I can line up 1-4 between the marks no problem. When i screw the plate back down, I cannot get the 2-3 marks to line up close. Its like a quarter inch off. I have checked the spring on advance and they look new and function normally...I can't figure it out.

Also pulled the plugs, and 2-3 were darker than the other two.

Theories:
1. Shouldve not dicked with emulsion tubes. I have good, unaltered new ones on the way.
2. Timing - no clue what is happening there. I am running a Dyna S ignition. Can I move the black crescents around to adjust? Maybe this is giving me my condition?
3. Could it be as simple as new plugs from when I was adjusting mix?

I am at 1 turn out on each carb for mix. I can get it to run at about 1200rpm but anything underneath it it wants to die?

This thing is close to kicking ass. Valves I know are good. I was meticulous and checked them again today. All is good there. See pics below

Forgot too that my float height seems good, although im wondering if they haven't been bent funny in the past. Like someone lifted on the floats instead of the tang. Everything is coming off again friday.

Timing is still a super stumper

UPDATE: You absolutely can move the boomerang around to get the timing right and it works awesome. My timing is not locked cocked and ready to rock. My plugs were pretty sooty so I am going to score new ones tomorrow. Also have an air filter coming.

How will emulsion tubes affect performance (idle, ect)

Good work telling that Dyna S who is boss!  Emulsion tubes can make a big difference.  When you set your float height it needs to be from the gasket surface not the upper lip which is 2mm higher.

I was doing carbs the other day and noticed that I was setting from the lip and not gasket surface as my float measure tool is too chunky.

My bike is a popcorn machine pop, pop, pop.  I am resetting mine 2mm lower to see if that makes a difference.  I think I was so lean that at times I was running out fo fuel.

Hope I did not burn a valve.

Change one thing at a time then test.  This way you know what impact the changes had.  You'll get it.
