Oil Filter brands
« on: September 21, 2015, 06:30:32 PM »
I have a CB350F - I'm in Canada.  I see someone on Kijiji is selling (claiming) Genuine Honda oil filters - 3 pack with 2 types gaskets for $15 + shipping. http://www.kijiji.ca/v-motorcycle-parts-accessories/oshawa-durham-region/honda-genuine-oil-filter-15410-426-010/1100198789?enableSearchNavigationFlag=true

Seems like a good price.  Then I tried searching to find any info on what brand of filter is good / recommended.

Didn't find much - the website link below - doesn't make it sound like there is much choice.

http://motorcycleinfo.calsci.com/FilterXRef.html

Does anyone know who makes Honda filters and if they are a good one to buy.

Parts Source and Canadian tire usually have them (Fram or something), or any bike shop. Amzoil filters are good and come with the O-rings like real Honda ones, some aftermarket ones do and some don't. Honda still sells them of course.

Hello to a fellow Ontario member. I try to avoid Fram, and EMGO filters.

I just bought some K&N 401 that seem to get reasonable reviews i bought them locally but check out https://www.canadasmotorcycle.ca/k-n-performance-gold-oil-filter.html they have them for a good price,

I have also bought WIX 24940 filters off rockauto.com for $5-$6 only problem is their motorcycle catalog isnt quite complete, if you order from them check out their spark plugs they are generally $1-$2 rather than $5-$6 locally.

Another good choice would be Purolator ML16809 although im not sure where to get these?!?!?

My mechanic told me Wix makes lots of quality filters for many different brands and that's what I use. They also come with a new o ring.

I wish Rockauto carried more motorcycle parts as their prices are hard to beat; they supply parts for my car as well. Their price for shipping to Canada is all in, no extra surprises at all.

K&N refuses to disclose any info on absolute or nominal ratings of the filter media. Seems to me that indicates they're not very proud of them. I have a few to use up and wouldn't avoid them but don't consider them better than any other filter.

If you can have 3 Genuine Honda oil filters (with rings) for only $ 15, I can't understand why you even hesitate and still look for imitations. Man, it's a steal. It's half the price we pay here.

I know that it is not fashionable here, but I never bought anything but genuine Honda. Works good for me for 39 years--with oil filters and gaskets. After all, the people who brought us the CB750 were probably not entirely incompetent when they selected the parts.

OK - thanks - I get Genuine Honda parts generally is the way to go, just didn't know if the FILTERS might be sub-contracted and there were better aftermarket filters.

Looks like I have a good source for some filters.

Appreciate the feedback guys!

It is possible that they are genuine or they could be a Chinese knockoff, only way to find out is to buy znd compare.
most aftermarket filters are 3.50-5.00 so, as has been said, buy them and see.

OK - the seller says he bought them for his Gold Wing, which he no longer has. part number 15410-426-010 that "fits all models"(listing many SOHC models including my CB350F) but the parts list for my bike has a different number: 15412-300-024

4into1.com seems to do this as well on some filters - see?  http://4into1.com/genuine-honda-oil-filter-with-o-rings-15410-426-010/

Do the genuine honda filters fit all sohc's?  Will this filter fit my CB350F?

Odds are they are legit, just sometimes there is a risk you get a counterfeit.
This guy is selling his excess parts, seems plausible.

Take for example the SP4000 dash camera some have used on their motorcycle...it is a decent model of dashcam that works well.  The knockoffs of a Chinese dashcam are out there and about $30 cheaper than the original.  It is crazy that a Chinese company is doing knockoffs of another Chinese product.  Who knows what they cost to make but, they must be enough to make it worthwhile.

A good aftermarket filter is the Filtro brand. I think they are Brit: they once came out with ones that had a wrong-size seal on it, and when I contacted them about it (too loose), they immediately recalled all their filters of the type, everywhere. When they got the rubber mold 'fixed' they sent me 3 to test, to be sure: when I replied back, only then did they put them back on the market. Good guys, good filters, too. I use them now on my own 750.

These are the ones I use all the time. HF401 is the part no. for the 750.

Interesting comment about the seals though - I've yet to buy one with the correct size seal (the ones supplied are correct diameter but too skinny) and I usually re-use the old ones (assuming you are talking about the large ones on the filter housing). These filters fit many bikes - for instance my old xjr1200 used the same one - so that part no. can never specifically be for one model. Also AFAIK the same part no. is listed for all the sohc 750s including the F2, which of course requires two seals but only one is supplied in the kit.

On The Red with the F2/3 engine I take a note on oil change and alternate which o-ring I replace.  So far so good, but compare to spin on filter I had on the K0, what a messy pain in the arse is to change the F2 filter :(

Since nobody in town stocks these filters, I usually buy two at a time at NAPA (NAPA Gold aka Wix); the local Honda is no help either, I learned to go there as the last instance and expect little.

The seal I am referring to is the one that slides around the filter bolt. The O-rings in these filter kits come in 3 distinct sizes, seemingly with no consistency. I have some of the HF401, some of the EMGO, and one Fram, and the HF401 (3 of them) have 1 with the thick oil housing O-ring, 2 with the thin one. The EMGOs have both. The Fram has none.
