Removing Neutral Switch ?
« on: December 01, 2015, 08:00:27 PM »
Seems to be an oil leak at my Neutral Switch of my 74' CB 750 K4. Haven't tried to tighten the switch yet if even able to. But if the O-ring is damaged or the switch is internally damaged itself, can you change out the switch easily without removing the exhaust? I'm assuming you have to drain the oil first.

Yes, you can change it without removing the exhausts.

You don't have to remove the oil but some will come out when you remove the old one.  Just have the new one ready and slide it in quickly.

Remove the wire, screw and D-washer holding it in place, pull it down and out with some pliers, remove and replace the O-ring. (OEM HONDA or Viton only here as both are temp and fluid rated)
Yes,  you'll get oil here. Draining pan first is a good idea.
Press in switch and secure back in place with Dwasher, re-attach wire.

true, but enough to make a mess  ;D
Those internal case sections can really collect a fair amount.

Does anyone know what size O-ring this Neutral Switch is?

Hondaman says:

...the older bikes used a 3.2x18mm, unless it leaked, then it had a 3.3x17.9mm instead. The Neutral Switch in the F2/3 cases are often so tight that I've used 3.0x18 or 3.0x17.9 just to get them put back together...

Thanks 70CB750,  Did a little more research and found them to be 3.0x18mm.  Part # 91307-KF0-003.  Called Honda locally and they had in stock. Hopefully that will stop the oil leak and the Neutral Switch is good.

While you have the switch out, you can test to see if it's good or not.  Test it for continuity with the ball extended and with the ball depressed.
If I remember correctly, you should get continuity with it depressed and no continuity when it's extended.

The Neutral light comes on the lighted panel when in neutral and goes out when the gear is engaged, so I'm assuming it's working fine. Oil is just weeping from either the seal or switch itself?

The other way :)

When the ball is depressed, you should not have continuity.  When the ball is in the dimple on the shift drum, thats when you should have connectivity - providing ground for the Neutral light.

Almost certainly from the seal.  I would say it's very, very unlikely that the switch itself is leaking.
