Gay or not, go with the one that allows you to strap on more stuff.  I think it would be a real pain to put it on and take it off on a regular basis, so get used to looking gay.    My buddy has a full trunk on his bike and yes it looks silly, but it is too dam useful to let go of.

i have often thought about the usefullness of the sissy bar, as perhaps offsetting its gayness.  mostly from growing up watching easy rider and it seemed like they had everything they needed neatly strapped to their sissy bars.   If i ever did though i dont think it would have the padding- i think it looks a lot less gay if it is just a metal bar that you can strap stuff to (very manly) than if it looks like you attempted to make your bike into a barcalounger.  maybe one day i will find an old wrought iron piece of ridiculousness, but until then i dont think i could put what i have seen on my bike in any sort of permanence.  so far i use a cargo net to get the backpack of my back, althouhg the extra back warmth might be reason enough to start wearing it again.  i have abstained from voting as there is no option for just metal.

No backrests are really permanent, at least not the ones i've seen. Nothing that cant be changed by pulling a couple of bolts. I'm going to keep my stock grab bar so i can swap back later if i want to.

 Why do you think they call it a "sissy" bar.  Then, when you start talking about whacking it off, I think you answered your own question.

Then again, I have a luggage rack and big ugly lockable tail trunk on my daily commuter.....its one of the best mods I've ever made.  I nice to have some junk in your trunk!

Ever since I bought my 750 this summer, my father in law keeps saying "when you putting a sissy bar on there.  It keeps your sissy from falling off the back."  He's a card that guy.

As an aside, it turns out that he had a 550 back after he got out of Vietnam.  I think he got a bit misty seeing a old honda running around-  and I have something else to talk to him about as a bonus.
