Sissybar/backrest Style Poll? Cast your vote now!
« on: November 03, 2006, 08:20:33 PM »
I acquired a luggage rack and sissybar last year for my Honda CB650 but haven't gotten around to messing with it till recently. I needed to adjust the mounting arms to fit my 1980 Honda, apparently it wasn't made to fit my 80 CB650 model like the Ebay auction said >:(.  After grinding and bending metal, as well as a long rant of profanities, i scrapped the arms and found a proper fitting set on ebay for $20. Yahtzee, what a deal, they are NOS as well.

Anyway moving on with the question. The backrest i have is very old school similar to Option A below (sorry i forgot to take pics before i took it apart). The vinyl is faded and nasty so i am going to recover it. Looking at the way it's made, it would be very easy to shape it like Option B.

I'm torn, old school period look or cleaner smaller look

Help me out with your vote

Thanks
Nate

Thank you for your educated response :D

I need the rack most of all to make it easier to stap stuff to the bike, the sissy bar will hold a backpack nicely.

It's a funcionality thing. I know they aren't the most attractive things in the world, but my ride isn't cafe'd up it's pure stock so it's not that bad.

Its cool Nate...function over fashion is OK.....if you're gay!!!!!....just kidding!!!! Sometimes,I would like to be able to carry stuff on the bike but just can't do the bar or saddlebag thing on this particular bike. I guess for an honest answer to your question,I would pick the shorter one.

That's what i was leaning towards as well. Actually i had only considered keeping it in it's current shape after my sewing machine connection (Mom & Pop) mentioned keeping it that way to keep the older look they remember seeing from their youth. I hate wearing a backpack while riding. the sweat seems to pool where the backpack lays against your back, really sucks, the rack will alleviate that problem.

Ummm...gotta go with option C. on this one.  A cargo net is not a bad option...works well for helmets to.

The setup i have will allow me to mount the rack without the backrest. I'll give it a go without the backrest, but i'm going to go ahead and recover the backrest after cutting it down to the Option B size. Wanted to try my hand at re-upholstering anyway.

Further proof of the advancement of the "gay agenda".
It starts with sissy bars.  What next?  Places to get a drink, dancing to disco, and the admiration of musical theater?

Hey, you want to ditch it, I would take it if I had a 650. I got one like the taller pic. I whacked the bottom off and left the top. I think it looks quite good. Gay responses are for those ashamed of their bike! ;D

A tank bag is great for carrying stuff and if magnetic can be easily removed. I use this and bungee cords/cargo net on the back.

cheers

I never cared much for sissy bars, but my V45 Magna had a built-in short bar. It had a compartment in it too. I found it very useful.

I had a friend that had a removable one on an old 550 years ago. It was like the ones you had posted, but they had a receiving tube on each side of the seat to slide the sissy bar into.

Looks are important if you like your bike to look sleek, but function I find usually will rule out style.

Yeah, I've got one myself, and I don't like it either, but it's too durn practical to take it off. I can carry just about anything I can strap on there, brought a sheet of plywood home from the lumber yard one time (oops.... this isn't the BS thread). Its great for travelling, backpack fits on one side, tent and sleeping bag on the other. I have a bicycle bag strapped on there now with all the little stuff. If I was a metal bender I'd make some discreet thing about half the size of what I have now and paint it black.

Hey Kev, I do that with my lid too! It is great for hangin your lid on while putting your jacket on. good place to hang a jacket too. Sometimes I would like to remove mine but I dont have a grab rail then and mine is all one unit. Passengers LOVE these things.

Gay or not, go with the one that allows you to strap on more stuff.  I think it would be a real pain to put it on and take it off on a regular basis, so get used to looking gay.  ;)  My buddy has a full trunk on his bike and yes it looks silly, but it is too dam useful to let go of.

i have often thought about the usefullness of the sissy bar, as perhaps offsetting its gayness.  mostly from growing up watching easy rider and it seemed like they had everything they needed neatly strapped to their sissy bars.   If i ever did though i dont think it would have the padding- i think it looks a lot less gay if it is just a metal bar that you can strap stuff to (very manly) than if it looks like you attempted to make your bike into a barcalounger.  maybe one day i will find an old wrought iron piece of ridiculousness, but until then i dont think i could put what i have seen on my bike in any sort of permanence.  so far i use a cargo net to get the backpack of my back, althouhg the extra back warmth might be reason enough to start wearing it again.  i have abstained from voting as there is no option for just metal.

No backrests are really permanent, at least not the ones i've seen. Nothing that cant be changed by pulling a couple of bolts. I'm going to keep my stock grab bar so i can swap back later if i want to.

Why do you think they call it a "sissy" bar.  Then, when you start talking about whacking it off, I think you answered your own question.

Then again, I have a luggage rack and big ugly lockable tail trunk on my daily commuter.....its one of the best mods I've ever made.  I nice to have some junk in your trunk!  :)

Ever since I bought my 750 this summer, my father in law keeps saying "when you putting a sissy bar on there.  It keeps your sissy from falling off the back."  He's a card that guy.

As an aside, it turns out that he had a 550 back after he got out of Vietnam.  I think he got a bit misty seeing a old honda running around-  and I have something else to talk to him about as a bonus.
