Some pictures from my cousin who pilots F-16s and commercial airline jets of the new F-35 and his ANG squadron.

This is why fighter pilots don't need Ferraris.

Yep, waste of money though, they do  look good but the Chinese know more about them than we do and they aren't as good in the air as the Russian or Chinese planes, its no wonder the Canadians  pulled out...... :o

Beautiful shots Don! I'm a huuuuuuuuuuuuge USAF and jet fighter fan/nerd. The Lightening II looks great, its just unfortunate it got labeled as a "Turkey" early on. I still like it alongside the Falcon, but my fav dissimilar fighter squadron is the Raptor-Eagle combo. Good luck surviving that one ;D

My cousin (who flies F-16s) hates the F-35 -- the boondoggle that became too big to fail.  He's flown the 16 in combat missions and lots of dogfighting with dissimilar aircraft -- Cope exercises and as a Red Flag pilot.  He's beaten a Russian thrust-vectoring fighter but not a Raptor.  His old Red Flag squadron was the first to ever beat the F-22.

Yes, its hard to argue that Bob, especially considering these were meant to be the "Cheaper" alternative to the Raptors.

I still admire the innovation and tech behind these amazing machines (fighter jets), the politics on the other hand I couldn't care less for ;D

Certainly not my intention to introduce politics, but I just can't get my head around one plane, the F-35C, cost being more than the entire annual budget of my home town (small city I guess) with about $40,000,000 to spare.  :o

FYI - initial unit cost was $98M for the A, $105M for the B and $116M for the C variants -- and current unit cost at $84M, $108M and $93M respectively.  Not cheap, but not $178M and $337M.  Bob, I wonder if those larger unit cost numbers also include the colossal Research and Development costs folded into them, which are recouped across current and future production.

Unit cost for the F-22 in 2009 was $150M with 195 actually built.

That is some stupid expensive tech, especially when we do not have any active conflicts necessarily needing that level of technology!  Still I would expect the product to be pretty stellar for that price tag -- and not the sea of complaints revolving around the F-35!

Oh no no, I'm sorry I didn't mean to imply that! As much as I love this stuff, there is no way I'd ever agree to the costs behind for many reasons including one's pointed out by Don.

I did find several sites quoting these amounts as well as the Lockheed Martin site with the numbers you listed. Either way, lots of $$$!!

Wow, am I running behind!!! I had never even heard of these F-35s and doesn't seem like I missed much. Wouldn't mind having just a portion of the cost of 1 though, sure would boost MY budget!  ;D

I know there are better Fighter Acft, but after Crewing an F-4C Phantom, in the Air Force, been kinda partial to that one. Liking the F-14 & F-15 as well. But, that's just me.

Well Bill you worked in a fighter squadron I believe on a flight line and I worked on a flight line in a maritime squadron (anti shipping, anti sub, reconnaissance) and when the sortie rate is mentioned you and I in our respective squadrons would be tearing our hair out by the roots trying get them into the air and they had civvy contractors to boot so I'm hoping Canada will pass on them, by the way how are you doing?

Wow a Phantom pilot! Ages ago I watched a documentary for the Tomcat and many of the Phantom pilots who were training on them were in quite the dilemma. They really loved their trusty Phantoms but couldn't deny how good the Tomcats were. Did you feel the same way?

You are right, Bill. Crewed an F-4C Phantom from Dec '67-Dec '69, in Northern Japan. Enjoyed it, to the fullest! Doing prettt well, btw and hope you are well also.

well, I actually was a Crew Chief, not a pilot. Enjoyed my time with the F-4s too. Yeah, like I said, I know there are better acft, bit will always remember my time spent with the F-4s and yes, gotta say those Tomcats were Bad as well.
