I think you've hit the nail on the head. For the oil pressure light to be of some use you have to be looking at it when it first lights up.  For this reason I believe Yamaha have fitted an Oil _Level_ light to my Yammie YZF750 SP and to at least one other model.

Is an oil pressure gauge really needed on a CB?
The red lamp will indicate if there is a problem if it take longer time as usual to be switch off when starting the bike.
OK, if there is an oil cooler mounted with hoses that can start to leak a lot, pressure will be really bad, tire grip too :)

The typical oil related problem that can happen on a CB750 is blocked oil feed to cam. Will an Oil pressure gauge alarm for this?
I have checked the oil level on my Cb750 rather often when bike is warm just for sure. At least once a week.

Never an oil fail on my bike, only too cheap oil or wrong oil (car oil)

Edit spelling, my fingers hit rate on keybpoard can be better :)

There are a few bikes which under semi-hard acceleration, will turn the oil light on. Especially if the level is low. So for them it does function a bit like a level light.

Answ: On a CB750, a gauge will not warn you if the valve train is starving for oil, due to an orifice plug. The pickup for the gauge is south of the valve gear. The gauge will only tell about main and rod bearing starving. But if the gauge is low, everything else is lower.

Powderman, what Webster means is "Not having a gauge in a position where any tipover/foot interference/other bother knocks off your gauge." Where they have it, you won't knock it off in a tipover. Myself, I'm going to use it for a handlebar mount period SW gauge I have had for years but wouldn't install because...wait for it...I had it on before and some ass tipped my CB750, ripped the flimsy plastic connecting tube and required my reinstalling the Honda blockoff cover which I thoughtfully had in my tool roll....

I check the oil pressure at start, traffic lights and before I shut her off.  In my experience fully warmed engine idles at 20psi with 20W50 oil.

When riding, the oil pressure is too much function of rpms to look at it anyway.   Still see no harm at quick glance down, it is faster than looking over your shoulder - and everybody does that.

I do the same thing. It's a rough way to judge temp and it works.

In the early 70's, I put an ammeter, oil temp and oil pressure gauge on my 750. I just liked to be able to see what was going on. I still kept the oil pressure warning light because it can call your attention. I think what I'd like best is some gauges to do monitoring and a really big warning light and buzzer to call your attention. This warning could be set off by any item being monitored. A series of OR gates (relays) would fire up the single warning. Then you could check the gauges to see what went south.

I wonder if there would be way to monitor oil pressure in the top end, after oil jets.

Maybe light to come on when there is difference in oil pressure left against right? Tap ends  of the camshaft towers?
