I just have a very strong feeling that that grinding off of it would be a killer. If I went to the dmv they could tell me it's being confiscated or some thing. I suppose it's best to just shoot em an email and ask.

I think to have that tag it had gone thru reregistration.. call DMV see if they have a history of that having happened. meanwhile look for a legal frame.
the motor.. to me it looks tampered with.. is that in fact true?  generally blank replacement cases are often not an issue..

Gus, what were your intentions for the bike? Keep it for yourself or fix up and sell it? Either way you could go the Vermont route for a transferable registration and no title hassles. I have Vermont antique plates on both my bikes ($10.00/yr) ;D and have never had a problem with cops right behind me at lights.

If you wanted to sell the bike you just explain to the potential buyer about the antique (25 or older)/no title process for Vermont and transfer the reg. to the buyer.

I would do the 3000 mile tune up as described in the service manual, then ride it to ensure that the transmission is OK. If all is OK then look for a used set of crankcases - they are on ebay. Pat

If it was me. Worst case scenario:

Frame:  you have to find a replacement frame with a good VIN,

Engine: I would mask off the vin area and coarse sandblast it to make it appear fresh and un stamped like the replacement cases from honda came. Then they can just be "replacement cases". or if you want it to be legit, replace the engine cases, but this is much more involved

Yep probably parting this out.

Cases are definitely not blank, it's been ground, guessing at same time minnesota tag was put on. Anyone ever done a carfax or other related report? Wonder what it would say

With the Minnesota stamp on there, I think we are good. Guessing it was stolen at some pt. And some a hole ground the numbers off frame and case. If I can find a decent motor it would be a matter or swapping out motors.

Here's my plan. Tonight a lengthy and descriptive email to DMV agent with pictures. Just be forthright and honest and maybe they will have an answer. Based on what they say I can make some choices. The guy I bought it from this morning said he didn't think they needed the engine number so it hadn't occurred to him. He did say he would buy the motor back if it didn't work out. Guess I'm only 300 into it but I was excited for the winter project

But it has a "recovered" tag Pat, looks like the frame number was ground off too, that bike has been re registered after being stolen and recovered, if that's all still all on file it shouldn't be a problem to register it again.... That frame tag should be proof enough... ;)

Here is my letter to the DMV Agent:
*******************************************************
Hello!

I am a Minnesota resident and I am exploring the possibility of restoring a 45 year old motorcycle. It is a 1970 Honda CB750. The motorcycle I am looking at is mostly complete, but needs some repair. Also, there were a couple of questions I have about the VIN and engine number. I want to make sure that I do this right and correctly, hence the email to you today.

To the best of my knowledge, the bike was in the hands of a collector and off the road since 1987. At one point, it appears that the bike was stolen and recovered. There is a special red State of Minnesota Recovery VIN on the neck of the bike (attached in photos) where the VIN was ground off by what I assume was a thief. At that time the engine serial number was also ground off. (see photos)

I am looking to attempt to title the bike using a bill of sale from the previous owner, and a statement of facts. The thing that concerns me is that when doing a Statement of Facts (and a later title transfer), I would have to include the engine number on the form. Since the numbers were ground off prior to recovery, there are no numbers there.

My question is: Is this a project I should take on, or would the titling process be too complicated due to the uniqueness of the circumstances? What I know about the motorcycle are posted below.

I appreciate any help or assistance you may be able to provide.

VIN: CB750106XXXX
Last known Plate number: MM 60-
Last time tabs were renewed: 1987
