I'm as mad as hell, and I'm not going to take it anymore!
« on: April 03, 2005, 05:57:47 PM »
Well after talking about it for way too long, I finally got off my ass and started on my F2 carbs. My good friend and co-contributor Clyde Ikin sent me a couple of sets of carbs awhile back, so I pulled the best set apart and gave them a thorough cleaning, including removing the pressed in pilot jets and every removeable item, soaking them in "Gun wash" (really cleans them up well) and blowing out all orifices with compressed air. I checked all the jets to ensure they were clear, and ran my oxy-acetylene welder tip cleaners through them to make sure there was no crud a-lingering.

Taking John Baldridges advice from my previous post I fitted larger main jets (110's up from 105's, I didn't have any 115's as John suggested) then I carefully re-assembled them, ensuring that the pilot mixture screws were turned out 1 3/4 turns, and the float heights set at 14.5mm. I then "bench-synched" the slides, and re-fitted the carbs. I turned the fuel on, and proceeded to kick, then kick, then kick some more..........

Tiring from all this effort, I engaged the "electric leg" with the help of a spare car battery and jumper leads, and eventually it fired up. It ran on #2, 3 and 4 cylinders (which was good as it wouldn't idle on #4 with the other carbs) for awhile, then picked up #1 now and then, which I put down to a fouled spark plug. I stopped experimenting with it when I realised that fuel was leaking out of the airbox around #4 carb and dripping all over my beautiful VHT satin black engine cases, lifting the paint as it dribbled down the sides of my beautiful VHT gloss black sprocket cover when I switched it off and put it on the side stand.

My first thought was to wash the remaining fuel off with my garden hose, but fearing that the pressure from the hose would blast the paint right off the cases, I took the opportunity to instead kick the dog who was in conveniently close proximity to me at the time, then I went inside and proceeded to get #$%*faced, to wash away the pain of defeat.

Next morning, I thought maybe I should clean the plugs while the engine was still nice and cold, anyway, I beadblasted them all and cleaned all the grit out, lightly oiled the threads and refitted them. I pulled out the choke and gave it a kick, then another, then another, and so on and so forth.

Hmmnnn. The dog was staying a respectful distance away and looked well prepared for flight, It was too early in the day to start drinking again, so instead I invited the mother-in-law over and did some work on her car, all the while muttering incoherently while thinking dark thoughts about what I've done for God to punish me as often as he does.I don't mean to sound disrespectful, but he really seems to enjoy making things difficult for me, I know it's good for my soul, but sometimes I think he's just taking the piss?

Tonight after work I intend to go out to the garage and fix the problem, trouble is, I don't have a clue how? I suppose I could just clean my original carbs and put them back on again, but if anything, the carbs that I've just cleaned and adjusted should work much better? Hmmnnn, now where did I leave that cigarette lighter? Any help will be appreciated guys, Cheers, Terry. :(

Cool new site you guys!
Terry,
It sounds like your float needles aren't seating.
Try adjusting the float bowls and verify the float needles are seating by leaving off the bowl and filling the fuel line (not attached to the tank).
When you hold the float up- no gas. Let go of float (not carb!)- gas.
Good luck and I'll bet if your dog could talk he woulda' said the same thing!!

Terry/You Auzzies,  frigging nuts, I gotta love ya Bro. Maybe I can make it down there and meet you and Muzza. (in Perth) I can do 115 F in the shade all day/night long. Love my Ales and red meat too;-) Bicycles don't have any carbs or plastic bodywork, or hundred kilo luggage packages. I'm thinking about opening a bicycle shop. They do however require more kicking and peddaling than your bike. Carbs suck, bout 75% of my job involves carberettrs. LOL
Yank the carb before they cost you another 2 buck for paint. I guess that's 100 bucks AUS? another kick to the nuts Bro? LOLLOLLOL Set them on the bench with a fuel bottle attached to check the floats BEFORE you install them on the bike. Flogg them a bit too, they will lie to you sometimes if you don't rattle them around a bit. and I don't want the dog to suffer any more punishment than needed. Take some rubbing compound to lapp the brass needles into the seats or up for a set of VITON needles. Only bout $100 AUS? K&L have them reasonably priced @ bout $5 american each?

My contribution for what it's worth at least will demonstrate that you are not alone.
I just finished a rebuild of my CB400F2, balanced the carbs on a makeshift tank, and forgot to reconnect the fuel line when re fitting the proper tank.
Fuel was deposited over my newly laquered engine case ruining the finish ( I had ommited to use petrol resistant laquer) so I had to spray it all again. Ho hum!!!
Good luck with the carbs,
Roger.

Well done Steve, I didn't think anyone else would remember the great man or the famous line from that movie "Network" from which he left his mortal coil................

Anyway, last night I pulled my old carbs out of the box under my workbench, and pulled the pilot jet that was causing the "no-idle" situation in cylinder #4 originally, and sure enough, it was terminally blocked. I tried to clear it with my oxy/acetylene tip cleaners, gun wash and shop air, all to no avail, but as I'd previously cannibalised another set of carbs that Clyde had sent me, I found one that was clear, gave it a clean and installed it, after of course pulling all the other carbs apart and cleaning every jet and orificie.

I checked the float levels and they were about right (14.5mm +/- .5mm) and the only glaring difference I noticed was that the pilot screws were wound out about 2 - 2 1/2 turns contrary to the factory manual's initial start position of 1 3/4 turns out. I had to "down tools" as my new favourite TV show "Myth Busters" was about to start, so didn't finish the cleanup, but tonight I'll "Bench Synch" the slides and refit the carbs after draining my fuel tank, cleaning the gauze filter and refilling it with nice fresh gas.

To answer a couple of the previous posts, the float needles are the rubber tipped type, and the bowl gaskets are the rubber O ring type. I'd had no problems with bowls leaking before but I think the fuel was leaking out of the air box, what I hadn't done when I cleaned the other carbs was blow the crud out of the overflow tube in the float bowl and I think that may have been blocked, allowing the fuel to rise up and flood that carb and run back into the airbox. I made sure that I cleaned out each of the overflow tubes this time, and refitted the float bowls in their original order.

I should have it all back together tonight (not much on TV on Tuesday night here) so I'll let you guys know how it all went. Thanks for your input so far, Cheers, Terry. ;D

Listen here, Chung. For your information - mate - the Aussie Dollar is doing a lot better than the Yankee Dollar. One Aussie Dollar will buy 78 of your cents. That's a lot better than it was 12 months ago when it got down to nearly 45 cents. Anyway, Australia is in the best financial position it's been for many years - way better than at your end. So, you had that haircut yet??

G'Day Josh, welcome back mate, long time no correspondence? Anyways, last night I got home from work, went out to the garage and finished tweaking my old carbs and refitted them. Now here's the embarrassing part Steve, when I took the tank off, I realised that I'd left off #2 spark plug lead! No wonder it ran like a piece of crap on Sunday after I'd cleaned the plugs.

Anyway, undaunted by my own stupidity, I charged further into the fray and hooked everything back up, and was rewarded by my most magnificent F2 bursting into life almost immediately! "Tres Bon", as our hairy-armpit-women loving, snail munching gallic friends are known to exclaim (almost as often as "I surrender!") Even better, it was running on all four cylinders, albeit a tad rich (read: I can't see the wall 20 feet away) but I'd set the pilot screws at 2 1/2 turns out, so I'll fine-tune them tomorrow night, and things'll be cool.

I'm happy, the dog's happy, so all I need to do now is remove the engine, strip it down to the last nut and bolt, get the engine cases "Hot Tanked" to remove all the old paint, etch prime the cases and paint them again with VHT engine enamel to bring them back to their former glory, reassemble the engine, and refit it back into the frame. Oh well, winter is on it's way here in the southern hemisphere, so it'll give me something to do on the two or three wet days that we're all dreading over the next 6 months! OR, I might get them powder coated? Cheers, Terry. 8)

G'Day Guys, Yeah, I'm in wet miserable Melbourne. Hey I bought my son's digicam yesterday (he wouldn't loan it to me when I told him what I want to do ;D) where do you reckon the best place to mount it is, on my bike, or on my helmet?

It's only gonna be about 28 deg C (80 deg F) on the weekend, but as cold as that is here, I'll still try to venture out for a ride on the F2 and shoot some footage of my favourite roads here.Is there some kind of bracket I can buy to fit it to my helmet like those skydivers use? Would be a lot better if I can "pan" around to look at stuff on the ride? Cheers, Terry. 8)

there was an ebay link in whoops! turn signal.  discussion.
it was a tank mount but could give design ideas if you wanted to make it yourself.
i myself used the neckstrap and another stretchy cord to give it more cling to my chest for less rattle.  (you guys wouldnt have enjoyed the first take)  then... i had to masking tape a film canister to the bottom to get it to point more upward instead of at the tank and guages... so in other words... you could just be creative.
yea, i know, i probably looked damn funny but tell me it wasnt worth it.

I'm really itching to try the camera thing!  I only have the regular digiital camera, but it takes video, too.  The maximum length of the video just depends on the size of the memory card.  It has a very small, fliexible tripod that came with it that could easily be converted to suction cup mount for the gas tank.  Now I just have to wait for the snow to melt up in the Rockies so I can take a ride up to the cabin.

G'Day Steve, to insert a pic, just click on "Additional Options", "Browse" and find an image in one of the files on your compuker, (or on a CD or floppy) double click on it, and press the "Post" button, and you're away. I just posted this pic of my old 350/4 resto as I wrote this, so it works. No, that's not a chicken mate, the blow-flies are pretty bad down here this year, ha ha! Cheers, Terry. 8)

G/Day Terry. I see from your comments you have sorted out your carb. problem. I had a flooding problem when I first turned on fuel to my F2 and managed to splash fuel over my black cases. However, the paint has shown no sign of damage. My cases were bead blasted and immediately painted with VHT Case Paint - this is a semi gloss paint. This paint is good for 500 Deg F. The cylinders, head and exhaust headers have been painted with flat black VHT Flame Proof SP-102-A. This paint is good for 1500 Deg F. I did not use a primer with either paint. Regards, Pat

Terry, just sling the camera around your neck and go! I used my stomach to get the camer to point above the instruments. Dont pan/use a head mount, instead use the widest field on your zoom and leave the "looking" to us. I would hate to have you ride past a nice girl (I know, probably a tourist) and have you swivel your head to lust after a flock'a sheep in the paddock.....
