  • Tryin' To Slow Down "Time"!
When I first bought my 750, the plan was to buy it cheap (which I did) fix it up (which is mostly done) and sell it. Now that the actual thought of selling has come around again, I don't quite know if I want to do it. Wife and wallet say, "Yes." Heart says, "Hell No!"

I hear you, after you put time, effort and part of yourself into a bike, I wouldn't want to just sell it. Sometimes, things might get tight and you have to sell but, till then Nah! I can see where, sometime down the road, ya might want to trade for another or sell to be able to be able to get another. But, till then (again) Nah!

                                                          Later on, Bill :) ;)

Believe me if I had my way I would keep both bikes and get another project to build. The problem is I have so many ideas floating in my big ol' head, that I cant cram all of them onto one bike, thus the need for multiple ones  ;D Like I have this idea for a badass hooligan bike made outta a single sided swingarm'ed Ducati Monster (or a new speed triple), I want to build a badass XS650 tracker, a hardtailed sporty bobber, etc... All comes to down to $$$ (space isnt a problem now with the Post Office in the city)..

We shall see if anyone wants either bike...

DAM PRO!!!, i change my undies less times than you change your mind!
peace

C'mon Ben, 'fess up mate, since moving to New Zealand, you probably haven't changed your undies at all, but that's ok, "When in Rome, do as the Romans do!"  ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

* CB/CL450 Update as of 6/08/07 *

Been awhile since I updated this thread, so I thought it was time.
Been kinda layin low on the CB450 project, so not any real big developments to speak of. Goldie looks SO much better on that thing than I do  ;D
Had alittle clutch dragging issue the last time I rode it (hence my post on where to get friction plates). It was weird, because when I would first startup the bike it would shift/ride fine, then once the bike warmed p the clutch would drag. I would adjust the cable out at the lever and it would be fine for another 5-10 min, and do it again ?? The problem ended up being I had lost 2 of the three bolts that hold the clutch cover on  ;D Must of been all that high performance riding right  ;). So as I would be riding down the street, the cover was moving, thus pulling on the clutch cable and making it hard to shift and what not. So three brand new Allen headed bolts are now in their, so it seems that the problem is solved.
On the same note I thought the oil could of been helping the clutch issue, as before yesterday I hadn't changed it (ever). So after I got the bike nice and hot, I loosened up the drain plug just to watch an explosion of oil dump out. This stuff was thinner than water, and had a real bad smell to it. I know I left my petcock on once so I am sure their was allot of fuel in the oil, but I am guessing the oil was just old. After i left it drip out for awhile, I poured a quart or so of new oil in their to kinda "flush" the bad carp outta their. People may say it is a waste of oil, but I think it's the best way to insure the old crap is gone. Once all was sealed back up the bike got three quarts of brand new Honda 10w-40 oil (per the owners manual ;D)The minute I started the bike up I could hear the motor running smoother/better than it was (amazing what good oil can do eh ?). So as far as I know the clutch dragging/bad oil issue is resolved..
Mods Vs. Rockers III is coming up in less than 2 weeks !
I automatically cant win whatever class I put the bike in because I am part of the host club, but I still want the bike to make an impression on the crowd. Their is no "cafe" class this year, so my choices are either to enter it in with the "Japanese" or "streetfighter" class. I am in charge of the later class so I will prob. dump it off their so I can keep an eye on it. If any of you guys can make it out for a HUGE bike show you should make the trip to Chicago. People are talking that it is easily gonna be DOUBLE the size of last years event, and even that one was huge. Just shows all the stickers we put up, our myspace page (http://www.myspace.com/tonupchicago) and flyer's we hand out do make a difference in attendance. Evern our Rockers Reunion show we had earlier this summer had more people show up then the 1st Mods Vs. Rockers... ;D
Now that I am keeping the CB450 I am gonna follow thru with the original plans to get the bike looking alittle better. Plans call for a complete repaint (in current colors) of the tank, headlite buckets and seat hump. I am gonna retain the factory stickers and badges, because it is a Honda so why not keep it looking like one ? The front-end is gonna get a dual-disc setup with cross drilled rotors, and the pipes will prob. (not sure yet) get the wrap taken off and be ceramic coated black. I also need to spend the time and re-do the right rearset so my rear brake actually works (been riding around with just a front since I got the bike done  ;D ;D ;D
I will have more pics soon (after the show)..
And as always, You Myspace users make sure to befriend me at http://www.myspace.com/tonupchicago
I am the one who maintains that site, and you can checkout all the pics from past events...

* CB/CL 450 Update *

My CB450 won best "streetfighter" yesterday at Mods Vs. Rockers III !  ;D
Their was no "cafe" class, so the cafe styled bikes kinda were mixed among the streetfighter, Japanese,German,British classes. Next year their is gonna be a dedicated cafe class. So it was cool to finally win a show with the cb450. People were in awe of the pipes, speed holes, and overall low stance of the bike...I was "allowed" to win because this show is judged by people that enter their bikes, not the club. My buddy (and fellow member) Danny wont his class with his Triumph Bobber as well...

The CB450 is going on the chopping block this week for some major surgery. I had alittle "incident" on the ride on Lake Shore Drive when I had TOTAL BRAKE FAILURE ! I mean nothing, not any brakes what so ever. The rear brake still needs to be worked on (so no rear) , and then for some reason I found my master for the front brake bone dry (thus NO brakes)..Did I mention It was downpouring and my bike has no fenders ? Lets just say it wasn't a good time. So I did the Fred flintstone thing and got the bike back to the shop with NO brakes (only 5 miles or so ::)). It was def. the worst motorcycle experience I have ever had (and hopefully ever do). Their is no way to describe the feeling you get when you are coming up to a major intersection in downtown Chicago dragging your feet on wet pavement as hard as you can and realizing you arent gonna make it. I was bumping into the back of cabs to stop, making hard right turns onto sidewalks, etc.. How I didn't dump my bike or worse I do not know. But I am here typing this today so thats all that matters..

SO, The CB450 needs a few safety things addressed before I throw a leg over it again. The front brakes need to be gone thru to figure out why/where I am leaking fluid, the right rearset needs to be fixed so I actually have a rear brake, the entire bike needs to be cleaned from riding int he rain, new plugs, clean the air filters, etc..

So because of this little "adventure", I am going to look into grafting on some modern brakes, or at the least do my stock dual disc setup. I have some "plans" for the motor so the more brakes I have the better. Lets just say their was a CB175 at the show yesterday with a turbo from a concrete cutting saw that got me "thinking".. ;D

Ya, the loss of brakes thing def. was not a good situation, then add the fact that it was downpouring and I couldnt see #$%*, no fenders on the bike, the bike itself was basically dieing out on me becasue the big K&n filters were waterlogged, and I was wearing shorts and a t-shirt (would of been OVER if I bit it).. But, I am here, I didnt dump the bike, and Now I know to check certain things before I take the bike out for a full day ride..
and if you do that turbo instal, you better keep us posted!!!!
Oh, a turbo WILL find it's way onto my CB450 come this winter, and I will keep all you guys posted as always.. ;D

So I did the Fred flintstone thing.....dragging your feet on wet pavement as hard as you can

Sorry to hear about your brakes, but glad you came through it unscathed... you didn't mention your underwear, but we will assume the best.

As someone who has done the Fred Flintstone himself, just be thankful that you don't have Barney Rubble legs... or that you at least lowered the 450!!!   ;D

Ya, Having the bike a low as I do def. helped with the "Flintstoning" I was doing.
I will have to post a pic of the flat spots on the toe's of my shoes I was wearing (kinda funny now)..
It was def. an experience that I won't soon forget, thats 4 sure...

* CB/CL450 UPDATE AS OF JUNE 23RD 2007 *

I have brakes !
We spent some time last night re-doing the right rearset angles so now I have full rear brakes  ;D So god forbid I loose my front again I have something to keep me out of a Chicago cabbies trunk ::) We also re-filled and bled the front brake again, and cleaned everything up so I can keep an eye on it and hopefully find out where it is leaking fluid from..It is def. not coming from the master, so I am guessing it is coming from the caliper somewhere...

I am on the hunt for a extra sidecover/engine cover (or whatever u wanna call it) for the next part of the project. In the quest to make the bike look as much like a racer as possible I have decided to install a oil cooler. I am having Team Hansen Honda (which happens to be 45min from my house ;D) weld on some AN fittings to the cover so I can run some "hardcore" lines to and from the cooler (will look much better than plain rubber hose-see below).

Still have yet to pickout an actual cooler, but that will come with time.

Besides the cooler I just plan to keep putting miles on the bike and tweaking/fixing all the little issues that come with a new build such as this. Over the winter the bike is gonna get torn down for a full repaint of tank/seat cowl and headlite, and I am gonna powdercoat allot of the parts I originally painted. I also want to course out some new wheels (either chrome or powdercoated black), to replace the dingy ones on their now.

More updates (and pics) to come !

Are you going to source another tank to paint mate? It'd be a real shame to paint over that nice OEM paint............  ???
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

I dont know what I am gonna do paint wise exactly.
The paint on the tank now is decent, but I think a fresh/new paintjob would make the bike look so much better.
I will prob. source out another tank to have repainted, and keep this one in the garage for "art"..

Good idea mate, it doesn't matter how nice your new paint job looks, they're not making any more new CB450 tanks, so once that OEM paint is gone, it's never coming back. I'm sure you could sell it and make enough to source another good tank and probably the paint too. Cheers, Terry. ;D

* CB450 Update 7/5/07 *

Took the CB450 out the other day for alittle bar hoppin in the city. The bike is finally starting to get to the point where the little BS/New bike build issues are fixed, and I can actually enjoy riding the little bastard ;D I know I have said it before but that little CB450 is the PERFECT city bike ! From being able to park it anywhere (mainly on the sidewalk), the crazy RPM the bike has (for stoplight races), and the attention the bike gets going down the street. If anyone lives in a big/busy city and am looking for the perfect bike, I def. recommend a CB450. Kinda the perfect mix of little bike with decent rideable/liveable power..

Anyways, on to the current bike issues:

BRAKES
The rear brake is alive and well. We remade the right rearset so the rear brake actually works.
Kinda nice to know if I loose my front brake again atleast I have something... The front caliper is awaiting the seals I ordered from Honda, and once that gets in that issue will be solved. I pretty much have all the parts I need to complete my dual-disc setup, but wont be going on the bike till later this year (or I get my ducati 2 ride while this bike is down;D)....

PAINT
The paint on the bike is still up in the air. I don't mind how it looks now, but I def. want a new/gloss/pro paint job on the bike eventually. I am def. gonna go/stick with some sort of green, but what exact shade I do not know. I def. am gonna stick with the original paint scheme and emblems, as it def. adds to the "vintage" feel of the bike. I do think I am gonna have some custom stripes made up for tank, so instead of gold inlay I will have it black (or something along those lines..).. I was thinking about maybe doing a bright/VTX1800 green, but I don't want the bike to look like a carnival ride..Maybe a black tank with a white stripe ?

OIL COOLER
I am dropping off an extra right side engine cover to Team Hansen Honda this coming weekend to have them weld in some AN fittings so I can run a oil cooler on the scoot.
Will look something like the pic below when I am done --->

Not that I am having an issue with hot oil, but I just like the look of a nice slim cooler with some honkin big AN lines going to and from it (it's the racecar/car guy side of me coming out ;D), plus it will give the bike alittle more oil capacity, which is always a good thing. I still need to source a cooler but that shouldn't be a big deal. Just another part to make the scoot look like a track bike. Still thinking about how I could do a number plaque on the bike and not have it look tacky. Wait till you see what we are doing to the headlite (gonna be so freakin cool).
Can you say acid etch ?

Thats about it for now. My main goal is to get the leaky brake fixed and get the bike home (outta the city) so I can have more time to work on it/do some detail work.

More updates to come (if anyone cares anymore  ;D)

Beautiful Honda.

Amazing dedication to detail makes this bike my new wallpaper :)

Two Questions,
Think those CL pipes will fit my 76 CB500T?
& I was thinking of running a H4 myself, which two wires did you jump in the headlight bucket?

Thanks & Congrats on the first place!

Thanks for having the scoot as your background, means allot. Once the cooler and dual discs go on the bike I am gonna spend some time cleaning and doing allot more detail work to really make it stand out in a crowd..

I think (thats the key word here) that those pipes will indeed fit a CB500T, as from what I know the cb450 and cb500 use the same block, just different internals, but don't quote me. If not I am sure u could make them fit with little to no effort...

As far as the headlite goes, I bought a glass "euro" headlite offa ebay which came with a 55w H4 bulb allready in it. Gives off a bunch of light, doesn't draw the bike down, etc..
No complaints what so ever...

Thanks for the prompty response.

I actually have several bike boneyardsclose by. Dont worry, I wont spend more than $20 on CL pipes.

Was that euro light just a 7" round headlight for a car or Jeep? Or specifically for a bike?

Sorry for the noob questions, its my first bike older than myself :)

Well Joe,

I've always loved the look of your 450, even before I saw it at ModsvsRockers.

I just spent about 2 hours reading this entire thread word for word.  Now you've got me really itching to get my CL350 up here and doing what I had originally planned.

So how much beer would I have to supply to get a spot in the Post Office to work on my stuff?  :P

I got your message from the other forum.  I would have liked to meet up, but I had to work tonight.  Keep me posted on any other gatherings though.  I don't know many riders in the city.

Peace

Well I picked up CL pipes for $9 at the junk yard. The mufflers were rusted off so I passed them off as scarp pieces. Im also looking for a good deal on those tires you got there. You did all the ahrd work already.

Score.

I have heard that CB450T and CB500T pipes are interchangeable, and obviously CL and CB450T swap :)

You are the man!

Got the front brake all fixed/rebuilt the other day, so now I can actually use both my front and rear brakes without having to worry about what I went thru before. Next project is to re-make the battery tray, because the one side cracked due to exessive use of horsepower  ;D

Score.

I have heard that CB450T and CB500T pipes are interchangeable, and obviously CL and CB450T swap :)

You are the man!

I think you need to know that there are 2 different 450s (at least) the 450 that is like the 500T, is called the CB450K0-K7 and not the 450T. Thought you ought to know that.  ;)

                                 Later on, Bill :) ;)
