How to prepare/paint engine cases
« on: March 22, 2016, 01:26:38 AM »
I can't imagine getting into every single nook and cranny completely removing the original paint by hand, especially considering that we can't really get aircraft stripper in Canada it seems (I have pure methylene chloride, but on its own, it evaporates too fast to do much).

I read somewhere that you can just clean all the grease off, scrape off any loose paint, and paint over with a self etching primer, followed by a colour coat? Is that reasonable, or will I end up with a crap finish?

I'd get it bead blasted, but I worry about mating surfaces and such...

Removing all paint is not necessary but def need to remove any loose paint that is flaking.
I would sand that edge until very smooth otherwise it will show.  Prep is everything, then a coat of VHT primer and two top coats and you'll have a new motor.

Polish the covers too.

Correct, complete paint removal is not necessary.
Let a good degreaser (ZEP Purple Commercial Degreaser), a long bristled scrub brush, and a pressure washer take care of the thich stuff.  After that....ACETONE.   Wipe down with acetone until a white rag comes up clean. Then paint.
I didnt use primer.   Straight VHT and a good cycle of heating in the oven.
My cases still look good.

Did you simply use your kitchen oven? How bad does it stink up the oven/house? Did you remove the tape before baking?

Had to plan for decent weather where the wife had an overnight nursing shift and I could open up the house.
A few hours later it was fine.

That zep purple #$%* will pull an unemployed 18 year old off a sofa......
But wear gloves or you will lose skins and possibly body parts...
My wife wont let me use her oven, or her dishwasher, or nothing....
So I used the barbecue on low low heat and it worked perfectly, but the Alberta beef tasted a bit funny for a few wweeks afterwardsbut i reckoned that it just masked all the growth hormones they are using so it all balanced out in the end..... :)
