Trouble After Tank Lining
« on: April 21, 2016, 03:52:53 PM »
Well, ever since I tore my bike down for it's spring tune up and a redkote tank seal.  I think I may have sealed something I shouldn't have.  :-[

Bike wants to starve for fuel and the simple remedy is to crack the gas cap open.

I already soaked the cap in MEK to clean the redkote off of that.  And peeled back the liner from around the big hole.  Ran a pick down the little hole (which I assume is a rain drain?) and still!  she wants to stall out on me.  Didn't behave this way before the tank seal.  unless I actually ran her out of gas completely  ;D

Before ya'll ask, I gave the tank 5 days to cure at 70degree temps before putting any gas in it.  I read the warning on the can about excess liner and cure times and off-gassing.  I'm fairly confident I did a little too good of a job!  At first I suspected those damn daichi condensers were going out.  But running with the cap open brought her back to life.

Is there anything inside that tank that shouldn't have been red-kote'd?

Even though you soaked the cap in MEK, it sounds like you still didn't clear out the vent hole.

Does the 550 supersport cap have a vent hole?  I can see daylight thru the tab where the chain connects and the spring loaded ears have big holes that are clean all around.  Is there anything else I should look for?

They also have a tiny triangular hole in the top - it's hard to see cause it's so small!

Follow up question, by triangle, did you mean the ridge off the side of the cap's center?  That toblerone chocolate shaped bump?

I just looked at my spare ss fuel cap and found it has like you say just a little ridge that the handle sits on when folded down, whereas the one on my bike has a teeny triangle hole on the side of the centre raised bit...
Dunno how the no hole one breaths  ???

yeah that was my question too. When doing tank liners, you should completely remove and put away the nice chrome cap entirely, as well as the petcocks...use rubber bung/plugs for the petcock hole(s) and plumber's sewer test plug or similar "mechanical" plug for the filler neck. like this:
I recently restored and sold a 77 cb750f, and am nearly finished with a (former basket case) cb750k5.  This is a place to share, learn and enjoy.  I am grateful to and for 99+% of this site's membership.

Saran wrap, zip lock bag, balloon, aluminum foil, anything you can put over the opening with a rubber band. Buy a new cap.

I'll look into replacing the cap eventually.
