74 550 rebuild

hello ladies and gents! a few weeks ago i was riding my bike when a vehicle pulled in front of me and i hit their car. OUCH!!!! no worries im doing fine. a few stitches in the foot and i'm golden (sore as hell, but golden).

ok so now my bike is totaled. insurance gave me a good amount for it so, i decided i'd buy it back and rebuild it!! my conundrum is what parts are good for the rebuild? i'll need new fork assembly, bars, headlight bucket and brackets, tank  :'( , probably a few other small parts and pieces but those are the big ones.

any recommendations???
when i find something, its usually in the last place i look

what does your state title?  the frame or the engine.
IIWM, and in WA they title the frame only, id take it somewhere to make sure it was straight.
Source a new front end, and wheel.
How did the engine do in the crash?  Does it shift smoothly thru gears?

here in kansas they title the frame. as far as i can tell the engine is fine. starts right up. haven't had a chance to go through the gears. and being that i'm in central kansas there aren't many vintage bike repair places close. can a standard body shop check the frame for straightness? i guess i could call and ask.

as far as a new front end. i've read a little on gsxr conversions but still unsure of what all that entails, same with the goldwing forks.

The Goldwing forks are easier because you can use the stock wheels. You also use the GL triples trees and just replace the steering tube with the one from your fork or another 550 triple tree if yours is damaged (you should be able to source via eBay). The GSXR is a more involved change unless you swap in matching wheels, and much more expensive. If you go to the Projects board and look at page 1 of the 1974 Honda CB550 Build "BlackSOHC" there is a detailed discussion on this subject.

Gsxr conversion will run you over a grand. Did mine with a cognito moto hub to keep it easy. If you end up needing any stock 550 parts let me know, have some front ends for sale.

I have done the GL swap.  You will need the entire front.  The forks are 37mm and spaced differently, as are the brake rotors) -- whereas, the 750/550 use 35 mm forks.

A Salvage title can never get rehabilitated -- at least in many states like California.  California titles the frame and engine.  So, check out your state's provisions on title.  You might just want to buy a cheap titled frame.

If you can find such a thing. I had to buy a roller with a seized engine. Bare titled frames are rare as hen's teeth and rarely cheap.

not worried about the title. i'll be issued a "non-highway title" after i fix it all i have to do is get it inspected by the highway patrol and then go to the courthouse to get it registered again and then i'll have a "salvage title" just like on a car. easy peasy.

I suppose that's okay if you never part with the bike, but if you sell it for any reason, it will not hold its value compared to one with clean title.

very true but, at the moment i don't for see selling it anytime soon. plus the ol lady got her mc license a month ago so it'll will be hers after its put back together
