On a 500/550/650 valve cover, since the rockers are integrated into the cover, rubber bands are stretched from intake to exhaust tappet to hold them all "up" as the cover is installed; reducing the chance of bending a valve or such ineptitude. Can be done without using them, but its like wearing a helmet when you ride- Chances of survival are better.

the rubber bands are used to hold the rockers up so they can't hang down and get caught on the edge of the valve stems when slapping the cover back on (can bend valves when you tighten it down) - I check them with my fingers and eyes and have never seen it happen...

I constantly check every rocker when reassembling a 500/550-never had a problem so I don't need no stinkin' rubbers

The school nurse told me the rubber was to cover the head, did I miss something?

Thanks for being a today's jackass, I appreciate it. The last guy to mown and work on my first 550 didn't use rubber bands it cost me several new valves and guides. But I like that UR 'special'.

Valves were waaaaaaaaay out.  Like measured in mm out :o
Cam chain adjusted
Daiichi points plate removed.
Advancer all rusted up, so a short detour to clean, polish, and trim springs.
Lubed and installed back on bike with a TEC plate and points.  Static timed.

Strange that it looks fresh inside but the points plate and stuff was in need of attention. Nice find either way!

Finally getting it light enough to get up on the gurney to deal with the snapped pan bolt.
Going to try left handed drill bits first.
Someone thought more wax was better ::)  Plastic putty knife cut through the majority of this. 
ZEP Purple and a pressure washer did the rest.

Would a few hard smacks with a BFH and some heat and a good penetrating oil be a better first start than breaking out the drill? Heck I would be doing that and use a good set of vice grips on it before drilling it.
