Topic: Got one! '76 CB400f - Lots of new pics

I'm not a new member, but I might be considered new new that I have a SOHC/4 to go along with my 350 twin (that is now in boxes).

I've been trolling for on of these for a while...so I worked quickly to pick up this '76.  I like the yellow...so that is a bonus.  Seller seems to be an honest bloke.

• 30,000 miles
• $1500 US
• It runs - sounds good to me
• Shifts through all gears
• All lights work
• No sheared cam adjustment bolt
• some dents in the tank - but the tank interior is spotless
• Non original mirrors...and the seat seems to be missing the chrome rivets
• silly looking wind screen

Yessir...I've been looking for one of these for a while.  Didn't think I'd find one for a reasonable buck in Canada.

I plan to just ride this one while I work on my '68 CB350 project.  That's the plan anyway.

I'll post better pics when I get her home and attempt to clean it up a bit.

I welcome any comments form keen observers of this bike.  The seat looks to be missing the grommets, and the mirrors are not correct.  Not sure about everything else.

Looks good, it is possible the lower fork caps are on backwards,  Hard to tell from the photos but the part of the bottom cap that is lower goes to the rear of  the bike.  In other words the gap should be in the back. Welcome...Larry

My plans are to get it certified for the road (been off the road for a few years)...and ride it grcamna2.

I've got a '68 350 Twin project I can work on in the meanwhile - it is in boxes.  Once the 350 is done, then maybe I'll re-do the 400f.

I just came back from a short ride.  Observations:

• It seems to run just fine.
• The clutch does take a lot of effort...and grabs right at the end.  I have adjusted it...it seems right at the end of adjustment. Maybe I need a new cable.
• Seem to go up the gears well
• I have not revved it past 5000 - no problems getting there at all.
• The headlight is quite faint - not sure if it's this particular bike.
• No smoke.
• Exhaust does smell rich - but, again, it seems to run fine.

Thanks MoMo.  Sharp eyes - I think you're right.  I looked for the pre-load adjustment...and didn't see it.  Maybe that's why!

I think Larry/MoMo may be referring to the bottom hold-down 'half-clamps' that hold-down the front axle,they need to have the closed part facing forward and the 'gaps' facing toward the rear of the bike,then you can accurately tighten them down to the correct factory torque.Check your oem Honda factory shop manual for removing and installing the front wheel.

Ha ha.  I figure I shouldn't go there until I've had a chance to go through the valve train...and adjust the cam chain.

I'll have to do a little research on here on the cam chain bolt - I did know they broke easily...but I'm not sure why that is the case.

Rust and people then try to ham fist them out without deruster or heat.  Plus, I broke one whilst removing the motor from the  frame

Here she is after a LOT of cleaning.  I don't think it had been cleaned since 1980.

She runs well - a little flat spot at 4000...but good other than that.  A rich mixture was addressed with a new air cleaner that had been in there for 10 years I'd bet.

She's a little loud with a "tap-tap-tap" sound...but I have not yet made it to the valves.
