Fake body bits and other replacements?
« on: November 17, 2006, 09:01:23 PM »
I ask this as it is clear that a great many of the members on this board are older. Some of us have lived harder than others.

1. I have plastic Knee Cap right knee
2. 2 Fused Vertebrae - Car accident that I broke just about every major bone on the left side of my body when I impacted a mountain wall at 60-75MPH. The truck nearly exploded. When it it the mountain wall in Hemit, CA, it went up about 15 ft and slammed back to the road upsidedown. Way too fast and way too much drinking that night. :P These are in my lower back and I never notice them and NEVER have pain from them.  ???
3. Right foot that was broken in 15 places (crushed by a concrete mixer chute on the sharp edge - leading edge) . Now have two pins in it. Ankle don't flex so good but not related to the knee bit. I have about 1/2 twist that everyone else does.
4. Reconstructed right Cornea at age 8.. Don't ask. I had to have a stick like the rest, lets just say that rakes bite back.

So Tom, are you the guy that urban myth (and the Darwin people), said bolted the JATO rocket to the roof of your truck?

No actually it was straight stupid. I drove WAY too fast. Anyone who has driven the roads into Hemit, CA can tell you that it is just not smart to drive 75 on any stretch of it. It was a bit like a Wylee Coyotee crash.  ::)

Some of us have lived harder than others.

Harder Tom, or stupid-er? Most of your damage seems to be er, "self inflicted"?

No offence mate, I've broken my fair share of bones either riding too hard (or too drunk) or not knowing when to duck, (or perhaps when to run) but I'd never make a statement like that, extolling the virtues of my own stupidity? I've no regrets for what I've done in my life, (no point in that) but that doesn't make me proud of my battle-scars either?

If most of the guys here have survived long lives without major injury, good for them, I've got a permanent back injury from one too many bad parachute landings that makes my life hell some days, and I wouldn't wish that on anyone. (although the DVA-paid weekly back massage by a beautiful 25 year old Vietnamese princess does go some way towards fair compensation................)

Welcome back by the way, have you sent those forks out yet? I looked at the calendar this week, it's only been 11 months now since you said you'd send 'em out tomorrow? Ha ha, it's been one hell of a long day mate, but it's getting dark out, so tomorrow won't be long now, I bet? Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Oh I do admit that the accident was dumb and self inflicted.

However no pain occured (lucky me from that accident, but lets go ahead in time) until it was insisted that I drive an Oshkosh Mix Truck that I was unfamiliar with to look good to the client. Normally I would have driven my 199? Advanaced mix truck  (ugly like sin but could get any job done anywhere), The chute on the pretty brand new truck fitted like shyte.

Anyone here who has delt with a mix truck in any capacity (even driving by) knows what the pain might be for dropping a section of the chute on your foot sharp edge down on your foot while standing on 3 stone (about 2-3 inches across). Don't care how tough you are, you WILL shreek like a school girl. The pain was so high that I could not make a sound at first. Then try finishing the pour and driving 35-45 miles back home to base on bumpy roads (out of radio conatact and no cell phone). Lucky me I was able to get help in the version of an ex that did not wish me dead.  :D

(back in time) The fake knee (also self inflicted) was due to me trying out a "Road Warrior" VW dune buggy on a frozen corn field and getting sideways when I was about 17. I flipped 13 times after the rear tire grabbed the frozen ground. Did I forget to say it was done less the seat belt?  ::) I had to drive her back using sticks as legs to run the controls to the farm house. No one knew I was out and it was about the 15th of Jan here in WI. DAMN COLD! Pissed me off double as this was the only thing that kept me from going on to playing College Football.

And yes the forks have shipped mate. No Offense ever taken mate  ;D The more I like ya the longer it takes to ship  ;) ;D

No worries Tom, I look forward to more of your "inspired" posts mate, not to mention finally, finally, finally seeing those forks, I'd never complain about "slack" friends BSing their long-time supporters, but i won't hold my breath either, just in case.............. ;D

I'm presently testing the idea of moving from a wheelchair to a walker.  I'm a Frankenstein also but I'm too pissed to talk about it.  The cost of drugs in this country is criminal.  I'm getting madder just sitting here -

A wheelchair situation is hard to take. I have been there 3 times. It made me very angry and near to bitter. The last time my wife was ready to shove me out a window. Don't know what to tell you. My wife says it was because of the meds the last time (I was an arsehole). I hope you do well my friend.

I can tell you I refocused that anger at my need to walk. I have been told by many Dr's that I would not walk again. Now I can run enough to play paintball and still ride a motorcycle like I used to. Being trapped in a half body cast and a Halo was hell..

Well, just injuries, surgeries, and missing internal parts.  No serious replacements, except some teeth.

Tom, how did you get into Scouts and Snipers with a fake knee?  Or did you just do like we all did in Israel, and lie...er, neglect to mention it?  ;)

Terry, in the IDF we always said that no infantry soldier (esp. airborne, special ops) reached their forties with intact joints.  Everybody pretty much ruins ankles, knees, hips, backs, or shoulders climbing and jumping in and out of things...and often at heights the human physiology doesn't typically tolerate for long!  I'm lucky I found a framework where I can again climb into an aircraft and do evacuations without too many questions asked.  Of course, we all cover for each other...

So Tom, is this your attempt to return some testosterone to the site?  :D

It does help when you have family ties in the USMC already. You know: Dont ask dont tell  ;D

And yes this is the testosterone this site needed. Battle scars: If you got'em show'em  ;D

Same here mate, and that old saying "the bigger they are, the harder they fall" is particularly pertinent when we're talking about military parachuting, I weighed just under 100 Kilo's (220 pounds) when I was jumping, and even if I was last in my stick, I always landed first,  ha ha! Cheers, Terry. ;D

Ya know, I always hated (still do!) evacuating guys your size.  Back then I was only about 62 kg.   :(  Sometimes had to be creative how we could carry someone out.  Even now I'm only about 68 kg.  I hate flying in somewhere and finding a patient who we can barely lift through the door of the aircraft...  >:(
