Cheap and EASY way to reinstall spark plugs
« on: November 19, 2006, 01:06:43 PM »
This one is borrowed from many years of being a Automotive Tech.

You take a foot long piece of 3/8's rubber hose and slip the plug in the end and then use your new handle to install the plug. The greatest part is that it is near impossible to cross thread the plug in the hole. The more worn you hose is the easier it will work as new hose will always have the bend from being on the spool.

Hope this helps you on your tune ups. I know I wont address a tune up without it. No matter what bike or car I am working on.  ;D

yeah, this works good. i used to have to do this on my old VW. it was the only way to get em in. i had to figure that out after dropping plugs between the heads and the cooling tins. trying to fish em out was a #$%*.

Yup good trick for the newbies there cheapo.

Just like to add that dropping sparkplugs is BAD.

Cracked ceramic is usually the result leading to all sorts of phantom problems.

A similar trick I learned was to take an old-style sparkplug boot and do the same thing.

Used this for the first time the other night.  Works great.  Thanks, Tom !

I learned this one the same hard way as you STL ;D
I dread to think how much finger and knuckle skin that damned volkswagen removed before I figured it out though ??? If only there had been internet forums back in the 80's ;)

The same trick comes in very handy when working on modern dual camshaft engined cars too 8)

We were using the hose in the 70's..about 4-5 inches will work and you can take it along.

Neat thing we did back then was take a small 1/4 drive socket and weld in the end of the plug wrench.. quicker..

Also weld a 12 mm socket to your oil filter bolt...
