K2 Broken, then repaired top triple clamp.
« on: August 06, 2016, 12:42:04 AM »
I had a badly bent K2 frame straightened out and I picked it up yesterday from the frame straightener. Was impressed that he managed to get the front and rear wheels in perfect alignment considering how far out they were beforehand.
However I was disappointed that he broke the top triple when removing the front end. He explained that he had repaired the breakage and that the right hand side of the clamp had also been broken and repaired at some stage during the bikes life as well. He pointed out where that repair had been made.....double disappointment.
I am not really keen to re-use a triple clamp that has been broken in one place, let alone two. Mr frame straightener was of the opinion that it should be ok but he is not the one who will be riding the bike.
Just looking for a few opinions here. Would I be crazy to even think of using this clamp again? To me the first repair job which was done prior to my ownership of the bike looks to have a hairline crack in it if you look closely. The more recent repair (shinier one) looks ok but it is hard to know what is going on inside the metal.
These unicorn triple clamps only suit the K0,K1,K2 and are pretty hard to find second hand and are generally quite pricey. I see that Yamiya sells a replica item but they are super pricey.
I get the feeling this type of clamp was badly designed from the start as they have the "D" shaped washer that the pinch bolts pass through so you do not break the clamp if you over tighten it.
Here are 3 pics. One shows the whole clamp, other 2 are close ups of each side. Left side one is a bit blury but there does seem to be a hairline crack.
Thank you

Get a nice billet replacement from Cognito Moto, Dime City Cycles, or wherever. Not worth risking your neck for originality.

What is the correct torque setting for bolts on this type of clamp? I have a 1971 K1 and have just removed the fork tubes.

So is there a torque value on the bolts so as to not overtighten and crack?

So is there a torque value on the bolts so as to not overtighten and crack?

I've never used my torque wrench on it, just tighten by feel.

The triple tops that I've seen broken are typically missing the D-washer, which acts as a spacer.

I've got a couple extra washers and I take one as an example w/ me to the hardware store to match up for the correct thickness and that way I make-up a few spares to keep from cracking that good hard(and brittle cast aluminum)oem original top triple. The other thing to be very careful with is removing the top triple, use plenty of WD40 and whatever you do don't use a steel hammer or drift punch.

Torque setting for that top bolt with the "D" washer is 6.5 - 9.4 ft. lbs. I use it on all my top fork bolts.

Hey Moe, to soften the blow I'll give you 50 bucks for your dodgy one, if you're interested? Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Thank you. I never realized the upper triple is so prone to cracking

I wouldn't use it.  Here's one for $127, hard to find cheaper that that.

Thanks for the tip Steve. The downer with that is the postage the seller has quoted $114 AU. A lot of ebayers really sting you for unrealistic postal charges. Carpy sent me a 4 into one exhaust for cheaper than that guy will send a triple clamp !.

I'll see how I go Terry. Was rather hoping you would have chimed in saying you had a box full of these clamps and could post it in one of those overnight bags dirt cheap.

Ha ha, well I've got a good one for my K0, but a busted one on my K1, so was hoping I could get yours welded up? Anyway, up to you mate, my offer's still good. Cheers, Terry. ;D

I've run a properly welded tree on my H1 triple for years and it takes the stress fine-many wheelies and upgraded front calipar that will lift the rear wheel. So long as it was V'd out / jig''d and repaired by a competent welder you should be good to go. It's done all the time and a good weld can be stronger than the original.

I have several such clamps for sale... That was probably my advert that someone mentioned having seen but now can't find it.
For the record I also have later style clamps for sale.
