Considering that a single gold medal is worth ~$9,500 - its surprising more athletes havent been robbed.
The average monthly income in rio is $750usd.  So robbing an oly gold medal would make someones year

Some Gold Medalists have earned $1M in endorsements, not from government.  Phelps net worth is reported to be $55M.

Yeah yeah, I know about endorsements, but a couple of Olympics ago, it was reported that the US Government was rewarding US gold medal winners by paying them $1M per gold medal won. I just wondered if the still did? ;D

$740,000 for that guy. NCAA changed the rules last year that allows Olympians to accept money from their government for medals won, and retain eligibility. So, he's headed back to UT $740,000 richer.

trouble is the Chinese and eastern block athletes have always been professional , at least now our athletes are getting paid and dont have to go to work
which allows them to compete on equal terms

We have 18-19yo amateur boxers who are going toe-to-toe with other country's pros and winning.
The Final Four proves we have amateur basketball players who are as good as any pro.
We could send amateurs from any sport and still win.

They vandalised a toilet in a service station and then made up some story about being robbed at gunpoint to cover it up.
