Usually work on earlier 750's etc where the float pins go in both directions. 78 different ?

It's either direction for the float pins on my carbs.  My bet is the end of the brass pin has gotten peened out by somebody thus fattening it to the point that it won't fit.

On my K8, it is either way. Sometimes they need some lube and gentle taps with something thin like a punch or a thin nail with the point ground flat. Once you get the end out enough to grab the tip a needle nose and a twisting action should pull it out.

They went in way easier than they came out. Almost loose.

Gas varnish will sieze them, use some carb cleaner on them. Be careful too, the posts sometimes break off if you get too rough.

They should slip in with your fingers, eyeball them to center them, then the floatbowl should prevent end play. Then in use the gas varnish will stiffen them up.
Keep in mind too if there is a burr or flare, going to need pressure to install...not so good.roll the end thru a finger and thumb with light pressure on it..should feel if uts flared or burred.. The end going in should be smooth and round.
