What would happen if...(750 trans question)
« on: November 21, 2016, 02:37:23 PM »
.....If the gears in this pic were reversed or installed backwards. Specific symptoms?
Would it even shift if either condition was accidentally created during a reassembly?

I have done it! for me 5th would hop into a false neutral and make a horrible sound....but...you could hold the shifter up with your toes and it would stay in gear....I did not do this often and quickly took it all apart again and put in a back-cut trans properly...

You'll get less than full engagement between the main and countershaft gears.
This goes for the thrust washers and circlips as well.  They have a specific side needing to be installed against the gear.

Hi DH,

Can't help with your question, but grateful for the image you attached. It's the best explanation of how to install those gears that I've ever seen.

I've already got it stuck up on the garage wall for when I re-assemble the next bottom end!

Are there any identifying marks that would indicate which side of the clips go against the gears? My gears somehow got bumped out of order while laying in the proper order for re assembly. I've been concerned about those two big end gears being installed wrong.
Not sure if they have anything to do with a balky 4/5 shift and sometimes a 5/4 shift. Feels like the dogs are crashing together. doesn't jump of gear.

You're welcome sir. Found it here on the forum someplace and saved it. Might be a bulletin.

No marks, but there is a taper/chamfer to the OD edge .  This chamfer must be oriented opposite from the gear it is pressed up against.
I'll see if I can find a good picture.

that'd be awesome sir. I'm probably going to pull it back out this winter just to re check things and every little bit of information helps.

The chamfered, or rounded side of the snap ring goes against the gear, and the sharp edged side faces out, or this may happen: :o

This thread brings up excellent points. Thanks to all for the link and information.
I definately have some more stuff to check. This is my example of what can
happen when a project is left sitting un assembled for long periods.
