BMW Vintage
« on: February 20, 2017, 11:28:43 am »
Got a call from a guy who wants to sell me a 750 and this old BMW. I don't know anything about this BMW and will see it this week. Have no idea the market or "demand" for such a bike. Can anyone shed any light on this bike for me.
Thanks

Earles fork Beemers are pretty cool, plus the forks adjust for sidecars.
I see a KO beside it.

I see that blue K0 also, got a picture of that to share also Johnie. Might even be a Sandcast discovery for you judging by the age of that Beemer.

Value would depend on many things as you know (title? engine/frame/trans#'s match?) but these bikes in general have a strong market. I'm not good enough to identify the exact model based on that picture (R50/R60/R69, with the latter being most valuable) but I seem to remember that the number of fins on the valve covers was an indicator as to weather it was a high performance model or not.

For reference, the 1964 R50 in our mutual friend's garage brought in offers from $3500 to $5000 (though it was in better condition).

Just remembered this handy website: http://bmwdean.com/slash2.htm Scroll down a ways for an identification guide.

Based on that info, you're looking at an R50 or R60 of standard compression. The number of cylinder fins (can't tell from your pic) will tell you which of the two it is.

Good leads there Trevor...thanks a lot. I am checking them out this Wed. The 750 is not a sandy, but is a 11/69 build with new cases and no engine number. More info after I see them this week.

$3,500-$5,000 for a 1964 R50 in better condition than the one shown in the picture is an absolute steal. You will have a hard time finding a good condition, running /2 (pre-1969) for much under $8,000.- pricing for these Beemers have gone through the roof over the last 3-4 years.

Not that I doubt what you're saying but I've been surprised how little some complete and possibly running /2's have brought on ebay in the last couple years. That has made me think that the $5000 offer was quite good. I know good examples can easily fetch 10k+ so 5k for a bike that's been sitting 15 years with 38k miles and unknown history (especially the slingers) seems pretty reasonable considering the cost of a rebuild.

If you get this next bike Johnie, you should get your wife to start having speaking engagements where she teaches other wives to be as cool as she is.

John.............the /2 tank may be the larger version and worth a bonus. Many years ago I had an R50.................only because someone owed me $200 and didn't have the cash. You can't go wrong unless you pass up the chance.
