Christmas Lights Hate'em or love'em
« on: December 10, 2006, 10:37:02 AM »
After putting up lights and having to deal with piss poor designs and poor craftsmanship I am happy to say that the seats we will be making will be made right here in Wisconsin and not two worlds away like the stupid lights I put up today.

it seems like there has been a shift toward development that maximizes profit rather than r & d toward quality product.  the mantra has changed to a cheaper mousetrap you can sell for only a little less than the better mousetrap.  i can only blame this on a short sighted consumer that doesnt realize it is cheaper to get something that works and lasts once than to replace cheaper versions of it perpetually.  besides the poor long term economy of this type of production model, disposable items consume more resources and create more waste (i.e. not sustainable.) Wal-Mart IS evil. remember that this giving season.  the dollar was worth more before walmart, (walmart has a huge influence on out place in the global economy) so making crap that costs a little less and devaluing the currency at the same time sounds like we got the short end of that one.  and i dont just mean walmart- i  mean any company that has contributed to the shift in distribution  model (the way they 'fight for consumers' to get the best price- forcing producers to make a cheaper product or make that product in a different country with cheaper labor in order to deliver the product at the price walmamrt demands 'for its customers.') sorry guys target does it too.  you know it when you see it.  or at least we should, i can imagine us losing the ability to notice this lack of quality- i see it happening with vegetables.  most of the produce you get at the major supermarkets tastes like crap, so people think they dont like vegetables, but they just forgot what real produce tastes like.  this happens because most folks live in urban or suburban centers where produce is expensive to get unless it is the factory farmed variety.  i fear this sort of thing happening across the board.

i realize this doesnt apply to the poll, but it does apply to the opening comment about piss poor design- what i call designing a cheaper mousetrap, and you have to be just as smart to sell people crap as you do to design a quality product- why are we using our smarts to hustle each other when we could be building a better world- let alone the mousetrap.

sorry- just one of those sunday afternoons in my mid twenties (happens to everyone right?)

They look nice on other people's houses, but I've never put them up myself.

I just put up a few. A little goes a long way.

I can't stand it when people go way over the top.

I finally eased my wife away from strings of lights to just candles in the windows. The first ones we had were 110v wired and a pain in the butt with the cords. Finally switched to some LED candles with flicker. Run 2,000 hours on a single AA batt. Oh, we do have a wreath on the door also, but that's it on the outside. Inside, that's another matter.  :-\ I put up the tree, string the lights and my wife is in charge of the rest of the Xmas chochkas. I just remind her, the more she puts up, the more she has to take down and pack away.  ;)

Bob, is your house sandcast?  And as for Christmas lights, I prefer the simple and elegant candle in each window.

Bob, that's a nice house. I like it.

As for lights, I love 'em if they're tastefully done. I have a string of the C7 lights along the roofline, small, white lights in the bushes, and a couple of small, lighted yard decorations. I do have one of those big, inflateable snow-globe things that I hate more every day. I would have taken a knife to it already but the wife and kids would get upset. It has small Styrofoam balls in it that are supposed to blow around. But if there's more than 5% humidity, condensation forms on the inside and all the stupid balls stick to the side. ARRGH!!!  >:(

I just ran a string around the front of the house and garage ( 100ft of c9's ) for the last 5 years or so with the standard green, red and white bulbs. But this year my brother in law and our local boy scout cub master were both call up for duty in Iraq. So I got 5 more strings of lights and some blue bulbs and put up red, white and blue lights all around the house and most of the shop. I told my niece and nephew We'd leave them up till their daddy comes home!! (18 months ) So I hope the red ones don't fade out to bad. Might have to get new ones for the home coming!! It will be a hell of a party since they can't have alcohol on the base over there! :'(
Yeah, I know it's cheesy but it was all I could think of at the time and I don't like taking down the lights anyway! ::)
