it seems like there has been a shift toward development that maximizes profit rather than r & d toward quality product. the mantra has changed to a cheaper mousetrap you can sell for only a little less than the better mousetrap. i can only blame this on a short sighted consumer that doesnt realize it is cheaper to get something that works and lasts once than to replace cheaper versions of it perpetually. besides the poor long term economy of this type of production model, disposable items consume more resources and create more waste (i.e. not sustainable.) Wal-Mart IS evil. remember that this giving season. the dollar was worth more before walmart, (walmart has a huge influence on out place in the global economy) so making crap that costs a little less and devaluing the currency at the same time sounds like we got the short end of that one. and i dont just mean walmart- i mean any company that has contributed to the shift in distribution model (the way they 'fight for consumers' to get the best price- forcing producers to make a cheaper product or make that product in a different country with cheaper labor in order to deliver the product at the price walmamrt demands 'for its customers.') sorry guys target does it too. you know it when you see it. or at least we should, i can imagine us losing the ability to notice this lack of quality- i see it happening with vegetables. most of the produce you get at the major supermarkets tastes like crap, so people think they dont like vegetables, but they just forgot what real produce tastes like. this happens because most folks live in urban or suburban centers where produce is expensive to get unless it is the factory farmed variety. i fear this sort of thing happening across the board.
i realize this doesnt apply to the poll, but it does apply to the opening comment about piss poor design- what i call designing a cheaper mousetrap, and you have to be just as smart to sell people crap as you do to design a quality product- why are we using our smarts to hustle each other when we could be building a better world- let alone the mousetrap.
sorry- just one of those sunday afternoons in my mid twenties (happens to everyone right?)
