Going land speed racing?  40 is gonna kill off the little bit of acceleration your bike has now.  46 tooth rear with an 18 front should be reasonable.   Personally, 17/48 is the best combo.  Just get used to high revs on the freeway.  You won't hurt anything.

The stock gearing is very good for all around riding. If you are trying to slow down the motor at speed you are going to suffer in acceleration and engine braking. These motors have a sweet spot in the power band starting around 4K and it gets better from there. If you go the other way it makes the bike very jumpy in 1st gear and very uncomfortable to ride.

Not sure what you are trying to do, but I would try a 19. Front before anything else..if you can find one. They can only pull so much gearing, not enough hp.
My bet is if you ran the 40 you would rarely be in 5th gear, over geared bikes are no fun.

Undergeared are fun, but they scream on the highway.
